THE SUPER FOLK DISCOVERY PACK
For those looking for their first guitar, Tanglewood offers a whole beginner’s pack that includes the Super Folk DBT SFCE NG, a road-safety guitar gig bag, three Tanglewood plectrums, a guitar strap and a DVD featuring a 30-minute guitar lesson.
ANATOMY
The single cutaway Super Folk has a grainy spruce top over mahogany sides and back, and a rosewood fretboard over a mahogany neck. The black and white ABS bindings are less ornate than the herringbone on the Sundance but are still neatly executed. The Saddle, nut and bridge pins are all white ABS. It also features a Tanglewood TEQ-2TB pickup with the input jack on the bottom side.
PLAYABILITY
Taking the Super Folk out of the box I noticed it is a lot lighter than the Sundance and the string action was also a lot higher, and even with the slim neck this made playing a little less comfortable. It took a bit of tuning on the chrome die-cast tuners before I could get going, and while the tuners weren’t stellar, at least the intonation held up adequately. There were one or two dead notes above the 12th fret but a minor fret job would fix that.
SOUNDS
Although it’s not a fair comparison, a few strums produced a pleasant enough, if somewhat boxy tone with significantly less volume, clarity and sustain than the Sundance. As the name suggests, this guitar is aimed more at quiet strumming and finger picking folk. Plugging the guitar in and playing a few licks I was surprised to hear some minor fret buzz and squeaking that I hadn’t heard unplugged. Tweaking the EQ helped somewhat in clearing that up but the slight boxiness remained.
CONCLUSION
Although The Super Folk is not as luxurious as the Sundance it holds its ground well against other guitars in its class and it looks a lot more appealing too. By entry-level standards I would certainly recommend it to a beginner.
