“Crisp, sharp and upfront - everything a live system should be”
The latest line of portable sound reinforcement speakers from Proel is called the ‘Flash’ series and is designed for those looking for light, handy enclosures.
Okay, so at first glance these are PA speakers that don’t carry a certain familiar acronym no one knows the definition of in any case. Nonetheless Proel has become a rather sought after name in live sound reinforcement simply by offering speakers that give you exactly what you paid for in the first place, and in some cases even more. Their upwardly mobile, versatile and affordable PA solution, the Flash system consists of the Flash 15SA active sub-woofer combined with the Flash 12A powered PA speaker. The other two models in the range are the Flash 12HA and two 15-inch versions (one active, one passive) and a choice of active or passive 15-inch loaded subwoofers to complete the range.
Anatomy
The 31.75kg, 15” sub with its wooden enclosure has thankfully been designed with easy transportation in mind. Built in casters, steel handles and pole mounts make the job of lugging this sucker around a little bit less of a spinal tap. Driven by a built in 350 watt continuous power amp and active stereo crossover with 100hz/160hz selectable frequencies, the bass bin also has necessities like stereo/mono settings, phase, ground lift, power, flat switches and a volume control.
The Flash 12A PA speaker weighs a mere 20kg, so expect some hugs from those roadies. Contained within hi-density polypropylene (plastic) walls, the 2-way bi-amplified system consists of the main 200 watt 12” woofer and the 1”50 watt HF compression driver with horn. On the reverse side it has a mic input with gain, line in and out, bass/treble/volume controls along with power and ground lift switches. The 12A is also stackable, pole mountable and also designed for use as a floor monitor.
Sound
Tech spec aside, this system actually sounds very decent indeed – crisp, sharp and upfront – everything a live system should be. The 12A’s shined, particularly on vocals with notably clear upper mids. Top end detail is excellent and the claimed 90-degree horizontal coverage is very believable. Bass response is acceptable although to really pack a punch the 15SA sub in tandem will be essential for a good kick, but even just the 12A’s will handle small room dispersion quite comfortably. Many venue owners may opt for the heavier and considerably more powerful Celestion driven Flash 12HA PA speaker system for obvious reasons. The 15SA sub is not to be trifled with though. Its super compact design allows you to cram more of them into the stage rig and the back of your aunt’s bakkie. The crossover gives you the control to neatly isolate the low end punch of the kick to centre stage where it’s supposed to be – no matter the musical genre. Overall it’s a dead simple, no nonsense solution to your live sound woes, and won’t make the piggy bank squeal too much either.
