Jimmy Dludlu / Claire Phillips
Jimmy Dludlu has come a long way from that moment when at the age of 13 he first picked up a handmade guitar. That moment however set his path. He taught himself to play and went on to become a global jazz icon. Long before record companies were aware of his talent, he was already celebrated as one of the hottest most stylish talents on the South African jazz music scene. He is an icon in the music industry and in the last Decade has continued to compose and make the kind of jazz music that stirs the soul – clearly influenced by various cultures around the continent and his interaction with other musicians on the world stage. His new album; “TONOTO”, introduces new facets of Jimmy and opens you up to feeling the world in a whole new way.
Claire Phillips will perform an opening act at this concert. As a singer- songwriter and musician, Claire’s repertoire spans jazz, funk, soul and folk. She plays the guitar, piano, saxophone and drums, but her acoustic guitar is her instrument of choice. Claire Phillips was the first musician in the country to win a SAMA Award for a debut album.
