Cultureclash 2011 a Huge Success

Academy of Sound Engineering students create fantastic music concert

This Heritage Weekend, the students of Academy of Sound Engineering pulled out all the stops at their annual student concert, Cultureclash. The band performances and production levels say it all – the venue was buzzing from 12 noon on Saturday to the early hours of the next morning.

Now in its fifth year, the concert was held in the grounds of Truth, an expansive property in Midrand, and saw an increase in the number of artists as well as the fact that the overall calibre of the artists this year were of a much higher standard. We also welcomed a new major sponsor onboard for the 2011 event. “We are thrilled that our decision to move Cultureclash outdoors has been vindicated by the enthusiastic response we received from sponsors, exhibitors, the media and the visiting public,” says George Hattingh, Head of Marketing at Academy of Sound Engineering.

The main aim of the festival is to allow students of Academy of Sound Engineering to put on a world-class outdoor event, thereby assisting them in their studies by providing practical access to the real-world concert environment, the technical and business management of such an event – and, of course, to have some fun with various different music genres (hence the name “Cultureclash”.)

Well organised and executed, the Cultureclash festival delivered on all its promises. In addition to the 28 live bands and 19 DJ’s. 8 Sponsors, including main event sponsor Dawn For Men, participated in the event, providing the crowd with a taste of the good life. Among the sponsors present at the event was Dawn For Men’s Nicole Howarth, who showcased the Dawn for Men products to the eager crowd and VIP’s. “Cultureclash and Academy of Sound Engineering provide a great platform to get our products exposed to the right youth markets,” she said.

Cultureclash provided great entertainment for the students of Academy of Sound Engineering and for all the other visitors who attended. “This concert is really great,” said Abi Dengler a student at ASE. “I can watch a great band, choose between two live stages, dance, eat and party to my heart’s content – what a great show.”

The festival catered for every palate and featured a wide range of artists who rocked the crowds and kept them on their feet. Headliners included Zebra and Giraffe, EvolverOne, Gang of Instrumentals, Voodoo Child, Pestroy, Knave, Chromium, Koldproduk, Redwood, Royal K, Kyle Worde and dozens more. The sound, lighting and staging were of the highest professional standards.

“The event was fabulously successful, with every inch of the venue packed with activities and people enjoying a day and night of music,” said Hattingh. “Cultureclash has grown into a major Jo’burg event and we will be working hard to ensure it gets even better next year, with the involvement of students and performers from the entire country. What is most amazing about this event is that it was completely conceived, developed, managed, set up, produced (technically), filmed and audio mixed by students of Academy of Sound Engineering. A DVD of the concert will also be produced by students. We are very proud of them, and this production just proves how successful their training at the Academy has been. No other college can claim this level of practical production experience by students.”

The happy faces and comments of visitors to the concert are testament to how Academy of Sound Engineering is fast becoming Africa’s leading provider of training and education in Sound Engineering, Music and Video Technology.

Academy of Sound Engineering would like to thank its students, the artists and above all the event sponsors, Dawn For Men, UJFM, Monster Energy, Audiosure, Sound Headquarters, Surge Sound, Music Connection, Sound GP and Fencit Transvaal. See you at the next Academy of Sound Engineering event!
