4am Brand New Music Video for Dark December
4am recently announced the online release of the brand new Full length 2nd studio album entitled “Neserton Drive”
Available on klicktrack
Singles off the album are already enjoying a lot of air play on radio stations country wide especially the release of the latest single entitled
Dark December. Due to this fact the band decided it was time to get behind the camera’s and shoot a music video for it. The shoot took place 2 weeks ago at “The Venue” Melrose Arch and had all the bells and whistle to go with it. The Video features the beautiful “Rikki Brest” and director Graham McCowen from Pixel Warrior was extremely happy with the outcome.
The video has a very personal message and illustrates the heartache that comes with losing someone close to you, due to the very many road accidents South Africa experiences every year. This song in particular is very important to 4am as it was in fact very close friends of the band that tragically passed away.
A Beautiful Life for The Rescu

Cape Town Rock trio, The Rescu, releases their brand new video for the powerful single “Beautiful Life”. The music video was shot in Cape Town by Dougal Paterson, known for his music video work with Farryl Purkiss (“Kissing Devils On The Cheek” and “Creeping Up On Me“), and captures the beautiful coastal scenery only South Africa can offer.
“The video was really cool to shoot, we were not too sure what to expect when Dougal pointed out the mountain top from the road below and said, “up there” but we trusted him and made the journey to the top. Most of the video is filmed from behind the band or to the side, so you get to see what we are playing to, which is basically the Atlantic ocean! There are some killer shots that he got as the sun was setting, where the band is playing to this wide open vista of sea and sky, a fitting location for a ‘Beautiful Life’”, comments guitarist, Graham Lowndes, on the making of the video.
“Beautiful Life” is the 2nd single from their self-titled debut album, released late in 2011 through 2 Feet Music. The album has already produced the hit single “I Did It For You”, and the latest single “Beautiful Life” is already making its way onto the playlist of some of SA’s top radio stations.
On writing the song, Graham Lowndes says: ”This was the first song we recorded for the album, it sums up one of our core beliefs as a band which is to live a life that’s beautiful. We are optimistic for the future of our country and the world we inhabit and this song is an encouragement to live life to the full. It’s a song that cheers on a life of no regrets even if all the decisions made weren’t perfect.”
The band is not only filled with musical talent, but drummer Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw, who recorded and co-produced The Rescu’s debut album, also recorded and co-produced The Dirty Skirts 2012 SAMA-winning album “Lost In The Fall” at his Heritage Sound studio.
On recording The Rescu’s album compared to working with The Dirty Skirts, Rusti comments, ”The process was similar in the fact that we had time to properly craft the songs and spend time away from the songs before committing to the final parts. We gave our album the same treatment technically that I would to The Skirts, but with a different atmosphere, because often we would slip a quick 2 hour bass session in amongst our busy schedules or Mike and Gray would be punching me in on a vocal part or Drum fill. When doing The Skirts I was in that headspace solidly for 3 months. Mike’s songs translate so well in studio so it wasn’t very hard to make them happen.”

The Parlotones present “THIS IS OUR STORY”
An intimate evening of songs and inspirations. Live at The Teatro at Montecasino 3/4 August 2012
It has been 10 years since The Parlotones ventured out of drummer Neil’s father’s garage and onto hundreds of stages across the world. The Parlotones have shared an extraordinary journey over the last decade and are looking forward to sharing this journey with their fans when they present “This Is Our Story” – an intimate evening of songs and inspirations – live at The Teatro at Montecasino on the 3rd and 4th August.
2012 certainly looks like the end of the world as The Parlotones know it. The year kicked off with an impressive start when they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for UNWomen, raised R600 000.00 with one of Neil’s paintings in the fight against Rhino poaching and the release of their brand new album “Journey through the shadows” is heading for Gold status in the first month of release.
To add to the excitement The Parlotones have been invited by UK Super band Snow Patrol to tour with them in Europe this summer. The Parlotones have been making waves across the globe for some time but it seems that 2012 will be the year it all comes together. With the 27 city headline tour of the USA in full swing, the band’s first US single has managed to enter the radio charts with massive support from radio stations across the USA as well as the Alternative iTunes charts in the USA and Rock charts in Germany. The band will play their final US show on the 20th of June and head straight onto Hamburg to join Snow Patrol on a series of dates before completing the tour with their debut performances at some of the world’s biggest festivals across Europe.
The band returns to SA in late July and straight into rehearsal for their latest concert theatre production entitled “This Is Our Story.”
“This is our story” will take the audience on a magical ride exploring their songs and delving into the inspirations behind them in an intimate theatre setting at the beautiful Teatro at Montecasino. Taking you down memory lane Kahn, Paul, Glen and Neil will give their insights on what has meant the most to them about the songs that have shaped South Africa’s most successful rock band of all time. The band will share the stories behind milestones songs such as Beautiful, Here Comes the Man, Colourful, Giant Mistake, I’ll Be There and countless others which shaped the band over the years.
To add to this great production, the show will take on an interactive role by enabling fans to communicate with the band on stage through social media and ask them the questions they would like to know the answers too.
The Parlotones have always led the way in the South African music landscape in terms of innovation and live performance. Having headlined the Coca Cola Dome, performed live at the FIFA World Cup kick off concert to hundreds of millions, broadcast a rock opera live in 3D across the world on multiple platforms The Parlotones are no strangers to setting new standards in live performance.
“This Is Our Story” is the band’s latest initiative to break new boundaries and make use of technology to create a more personal and intimate performance that will leave fans with a whole new perspective.
Tickets available at Computicket.

Kimbra releases global version of debut album ‘Vows’
International newcomer Kimbra will see the global release of her debut album Vows on May 28, 2012. Vows features several brand new songs in addition to tracks from the platinum-certified Australian edition of the album.
Released in Australia in August 2011, Vows has earned Kimbra a “one to watch” rave from Rolling Stone Australia, won her the ARIA (Australian Grammy) for Best Female Artist and spawned three hit singles. These tracks, “Good Intent,” “Cameo Lover,” and “Settle Down,” are also included on the US edition of Vows. Kimbra recorded additional tracks for the release in Los Angeles, CA with such producers and songwriters as Mike Elizondo and Greg Kurstin.
Originating from Hamilton, New Zealand, Kimbra has been performing her jazz-inflected pop since she was 14. Kimbra’s haunting vocals and impassioned delivery on the Gotye track “Somebody That I Used to Know” have helped propel it to an international hit: the video for the song has over 110 million views and is at the top of the global radio charts.
This year is shaping up to be an extremely busy one for Kimbra. Fresh from a whirlwind European run with Gotye, Kimbra performed at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, TX in March. She then re-joined Gotye on his headline tour of the US. Later this year, she will support Foster the People on their US tour.
YESTERDAYʼS PUPIL Release Part 3 – FORMATIVE YEARS
On the 15th of May, YESTERDAYʼS PUPIL officially released the third part of his new album. Part 3 – entitled FORMATIVE YEARS, comes after the release of Part 2 (Duel!) in January 2012, and Part 1 (Singularity) in November 2011.
“I think Part 3 is the part where people can start seeing a little glimpse of the album as a whole. I chose the title because everyone has formative years, and also because it relates well to the two songs; they are about growing up and being human.”
MUSCLE&SKIN was originally intended to be on his first album, Errors of Enthusiasm, but never made it on the album due to the regular load shedding that was taking place in South Africa during that time, 2007.
“I lost the song to the power being cut in the middle of the recording process. I did not re-record the song, I instead just put the preproduction version of the song on the album as is and called it ʻThe Load Shedʼ as a painful reminder that electricity is a luxury.”
Four years went by before he was inspired to settle the score and record the song again. A lot has changed from the original idea – lyrically and musically the song has had time to mature and has grown a lot since its original idea.
Yesterday’s Pupil started working on TALK LIKE STONES on a plane to Cape Town about a year and a half ago and it revolves around the thought of what would two stones in the bottom of a well talk about if they could talk? We know that there is no chance of them ever getting out, because stones can’t climb, so they are destined to just lie there next to one another for eternity with nothing to do but talk.
“My best friend has been in out of several psychiatric wards during the past few years, often for months at a time. He is schizophrenic, he never used to be, but who knows how these things work. It was a strange thing to witness how someone you know so well can become so lost within his own mind. We would speak about all kinds of things during our visits, and sometimes we would not speak at all.
I would wonder if some of the things he saw weren’t more real than what we perceive reality to be, perhaps amongst all the delusions there were a few truths that we are not supposed to see. I believe that we are all spiritual beings having a physical experience. I can see it in him. Somehow there is a connection between this song and this experience, perhaps not directly, but in a way that we understand.”
Part 4 is set for release in July 2012.

The band also performed at The Viper Room, home to Hollywood’s elite. It was here that they created a roar with the newest green member, better known as The Fraq. Natasha Meister’s very first official music video
Natasha Meister has launched her first music video on Showbiz Report this past Saturday.
Upon asking her what the music video means to her she had the following to say:
“Had the amazing opportunity of shooting my first official music video for one of the tracks off my debut album called Safe In The Silence. The video was produced and directed by Bauke Brouwer who has had experience making short films and doing editing for shows like Top Billing. I wanted to shoot a video for this song as I had gotten such a great response from my fans for this track in particular. It’s probably the most personal and vulnerable song from the album even though it has an upbeat and playful style…I open myself up and let my fans know the real me.
The video is made up of shots of me walking around, playing my guitar and looking for inspiration in the streets of Seapoint late at night when it’s dead quiet and no one else is around to give the effect of “loneliness” and “silence” compared to a generally busy city during the day. The first line of the song describes it the best – “I’m always here, just where I belong”- a lot of my fans have no idea that I’m actually this shy and quiet person behind the scenes when I’m not on stage. I’ve always felt indifferent and left out because of my shyness but I’m learning to accept it. I know that there are many people out there that feel the same way so I’m hoping they can connect with this song.”
VAN COKE KARTEL releases a free track to say ‘thank you’

MACSTANLEY at Tanz Cafe 19 May
Like all truly world-beating bands, MACSTANLEY (formerly FLAT STANLEY) is greater than the sum of its parts. It started with the simple beginnings of big dreams, two chance meetings and a humble song-writing competition in Cape Town, and has grown to encompass sold-out shows across South Africa and Europe; pioneering work with a full orchestra; radio hits and a growing global fan-base. Throughout it all, Andy Mac, Clinton and Neil have upheld an unflagging commitment to giving their audiences songs that make music live beyond the stage-show, the album or the download. It’s a journey that’s taken them from club stages to stadiums and led to their greatest venture yet, a soon-to-be-released brand new 12 track album produced by Brian O’Shea and co-produced and engineered by Chris Tuck.
“Lucid, Alive & Dreaming” is the new MACSTANLEY album and it marks their finest work to date – a collection of music that ramps up the sound of the band into a contemporary gear while retaining the signature elements that have brought this pop-rock powerhouse to where it is today. MACSTANLEY have shared stages with Counting Crows, Collective Soul and Metallica, to name a few; graced stages like the Coca-Cola “Massive Mix”, Levi’s “Rage For the Revolution”, Joburg Day and their own immaculately presented theatre-stage music nights. They’ve enjoyed massive airplay and several Top 10 singles on major radio stations across SA and Europe. With their last release, “Between 2wo Worlds” (2007) receiving a South African Music Award nomination, all eyes – and ears – are on this new album.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the band’s first public live show in Gauteng of 2012 at TANZ CAFE, and the chance to hear a collection of the brand new songs along with all their radio hits that everyone has come to know and love.

Start Smart Music Industry workshops in Port Elizabeth by David Chislett
MUSIC industry professional, author and speaker David Chislett returns to Nelson Mandela Bay on the May 9 with a new workshop for music artists and professionals.
Following up on his visit in 2011, Chislett brings a new presentation that is aimed at clarifying where the money in the music industry comes from, what artists need to do to access it and how to maximise your earnings through music.
“The Music Business Money Trail is a three-hour interactive session that will help all levels of musicians understand where the money in the business comes from and how to access it more easily,” said Chislett.
Taking place from 6:30pm on Wednesday of May 9 at the Athanaeum, the essence of the seminar is to heighten artists’ and managers’ awareness of how many money trails there, are as well as how to access them.
Chislett is the author of 1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The SA Music Industry which was published in 2010. “The book is an essential guide to the inner workings and behind the scenes elements of the music business. It is mandatory reading for anyone wanting to make a career out of music and has been helping young artists to avoid the worst pitfalls of a ruthless and sometimes heartless industry,” said Amy Shelver, co-founder of the n_mb city project, which has brought Chislett to the city.
Chislett began his music career in Port Elizabeth in 1987, playing in garage bands and composing songs with his school friends. Since then he has worked as a manager, publicist, bass player, digital label owner and training facilitator.
“When I started out, there was no way of accessing the information contained in these sessions and in my book,” he explains of his motivations. “I really would like to see South African music become a global force, but without a sound understanding of the businessside of music, most musicians don’t last long enough to stand a chance in this country.”
Brought to you by the n_mb city project, the Music Business Money Trail is an essential course for Eastern Cape artists, managers and musicians to attend. At only R20 admission it is an affordable way to learn the insider tips and techniques that can help just about anyone do better with their career.
The n_mb city project is a local youth network focused on nurturing and supporting an emergent arts and culture industry in Nelson Mandela Bay. It aims to unite the multifaceted creative collective in Nelson Mandela Bay and work towards building a sustained, creative renaissance in the city through education, networking and exposure to the happenings of the national scene.

Josie Field talks at Emendy Music College Workshop
On the 7th March 2012, EMENDY had the pleasure of Hosting Singer/Songwriter Josie Fields.
Josie is an extremely talented musician and her soulful outlook on music is nothing less than inspiring. she has successfully taken occupation of that part of the musical terrain defined by free-flowing – sometimes spiky – folk pop coupled with intense and often personal lyrics. Her producer Kevin Leicher is a great compliment to her music and after producing Field’s debut, 2006′s “Mercury” and her follow-up “Leyland” (2008), Leicher has an intuitive feel for the songs that she brings into the studio and on “1984″ he is credited as a co-composer, with Field, of the music on the album (with Field handling all lyrics).
Leicher also contributes electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide, ukelele, keyboards, percussion and programming to the record, complementing Field’s acoustic guitar and ukelele playing with ease. Max Lehr on drums and Warren Leicher on bass provide the rhythm section that Field has been playing with for some time now.
Josie spoke about, her songwriting and musical career in general as an ongoing inspiration in her life and she continues to find new ways in which to express herself in her music. Just like the introduction of her Ukelele which she admitted was a way to start again and discover music from the beginning. Introducing a new instrument helped her to write more songs because of the fact that she was merely learning a new instrument and couldn’t automatically continue her original ways of songwriting.
Josie Field will continue to enrich the lives of others and inspire other musicians to dig deep and remember their roots well still enjoying the simple joys of music.
New BIRDY Intro Video A Must See
Following the release of her three singles ‘Skinny Love’, ‘Shelter’ and ‘People Help the People’, Birdy (AKA Jasmine Van den Bogaerde) releases her album through 14th Floor/Atlantic Records (Warner Music Gallo Africa in South Africa)
Entitled BIRDY, the album features her unique interpretation of songs by Bon Iver, Cherry Ghost, Phoenix, The National, The Postal Service and The xx.
Birdy recorded the album in the UK and US and worked with some of the best producers of the moment including Rich Costey (Muse, TV on the Radio), James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Last Shadow Puppets and Klaxons) and Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys).
Her fragile and emotive vocals have captured the hearts of some big fans in the UK media. One of her main supporters, Fearne Cotton had Birdy on to do her first live radio interview and performance on Radio 1’s Live Lounge. After her spine-tingling performances of ‘Shelter’ and her cover of Ed Sheeran’s ‘The A Team’, she was the 2nd most viewed UK musician on YouTube and she was trending on twitter. In under 6 months, she’s had more than 15 million views of her content on YouTube including 400k of her cover of ‘The A Team’ and 5 million views of ‘Skinny Love’. ‘Skinny Love’ and ‘Shelter’ have featured in an episode of ‘Vampire Diaries’ and was in the top 10 alternative chart in iTunes in the US, France and Germany.
Birdy commented, ‘’I'm so excited to be releasing my very first album. I’ve had so many amazing experiences in the past year. It has all felt like a dream come true. I just can’t wait for everyone to hear it.’

PEACHY KEEN Release Their EP, BACKSEAT BINGO!
On the 11th of May, Cape Town rock-a-billy band, PEACHY KEEN, will launch their first EP, BACKSEAT BINGO. The EP was recorded at Cedric Samsonʼs Tree House Studios in Hout Bay with Samson at the helm of production. Peachy Keen released their first single and music video for Shot A Man Down in March.
“The EP was inspired by mostly a combination of life experiences, various musical influences and our fans.”
ʻBackseat Bingoʼ is a 50ʼs slang term for fooling around in the backseat of a car and the brainchild of Peachy Keen for the title of the EP. The term can also be associated with their rock-a-billy roots and their love of all things 50ʼs. Peachy Keen believe that the EP is a truthful representation of what they are about, writing and performing good music and having fun.
“And most importantly, it is an acceptable way of saying something that is
essentially dirty and we like that.” - Peachy Keen on choosing the name ʻBackseat Bingoʼ as title of their EP.
Peachy Keen have been touring their infectious rock-a-billy sound across the country for the better part of a year and throughout this time, song writing was an ongoing and enjoyable process for the band. Backseat Bingo is a taste of things to come. Peachy Keen have plans to record a full length album in 2012 and have also just signed to Sheer Music.
Track List: BACKSEAT BINGO
1. Do I Have to Explain?
2. Shot a Man Down
3. Donʼt Call Me Baby
4. Baby Girl Youʼre Gonna Burn!
5. Oh! Darling
PEACHY KEEN EP Launch
Peachy Keen will launch Backseat Bingo on Friday, the 11th of May at Mercury Live in Cape Town. The will be supported by guests, The Nomadic Orchestra and Rambling Bones. Entrance is R40 (or R100 with an EP) and doors open at 9PM.
Backseat Bingo will be on sale at the EP launch, all live shows after that and in all local CD outlets.

Linkin Park announce the title and release date of their new album!
Through their official website, LINKIN PARK has announced a June 25th release date for their new album, LIVING THINGS (Machine Shop Recordings/Warner Bros.) The album is co-produced by Rick Rubin (Adele, Metallica) and Linkin Park vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Shinoda, who co-produced Linkin Park’s last two albums. Rolling Stone magazine says, “The material is the bands most powerful since its megahit 2000 debut.”
The first single from the new album, “Burn It Down,” premiered on radio, and is now available through iTunes. Fans can pre-order LIVING THINGS from the band’s website, and will receive an immediate download of the single.
The Plastics new music video for Stereo Kids
The Plastics launch their 6th music video. This time it’s the latest single ‘STEREO KIDS’ that is getting synced up to picture. Stereo Kids was released to radio stations nationwide in December 2011. The track is currently play listed on most SA radio stations including 5FM, where Stereo Kids has been on their Top 40 chart for the past 10weeks. Peeking at number 8 last week, the song also held the number 1 spot for two weeks on the 5FM Rock Chart. The music video was directed by Robert Smith.
He is also the brain behind the conceptfor the video and with his experience in the film industry, combined with his attentionto detail, Robert created a perfectly suited video for Stereo Kids.“We’re excited to see the reaction to the Stereo Kids music video. The song has been really good to us and we think the video helps bring outthe fun, quirky, carefree nature of the song.” The concept follows a kid at an 80‘s-style prom trying to woo a girl through the song. Itenvokes the familiar feeling of teenager boys’ awkwardness around girls at a party withthe guys and girls all hanging out in their own groups. The video was shot in one day at Camps Bay Primary School in Cape Town and included a cast and crew of around 50people working on the production. The Stereo Kids video ties in to both Caves andCaroline, (both previous videos from The Plastics) with regards to being based on adance routine and on guy-girl dynamics.
The band will start tracking the new album at Dreamspace Recording Studios in Cape Town over the following months of May, June and July.
Demon Hunter’s sixth full length Metal Album, True Defiance released in SA
Demon Hunter’s sixth full-length album “True Defiance” is now available in South African stores.
Produced by Aaron Sprinkle (Anberlin, Emery) and mixed by Jason Suecoff (All That Remains, Trivium), “True Defiance” finds Demon Hunter continuing in their hard rock evolution while embracing the components that have always formed the backbone of their music: true metal, dark rock and balladry.
“This record is without a doubt our most aggressive,” says vocalist and band co-founder Ryan Clark. “Every Demon Hunter record must be a step up from the last. I know that’s a goal for every band, but it seldom works that way – especially today, especially in metal. It seems like most bands’ prime years are long behind them. I refuse to let that be the case for us.”
On “True Defiance,” Ryan Clark, Tim “Yogi” Watts (drums), Jonathan Dunn (bass) and Patrick Judge (lead guitar) are joined by their longtime friend Jeremiah Scott (guitar), whose credits as a metal musician (The Showdown) and producer (Living Sacrifice) are well established. The partnership marks a vital new chapter in the celebrated history of Demon Hunter, who are currently in their 10th year of writing, breaking and erasing the rules of hard rock. Not ones to rest on their laurels, however, the members have created an album that not only lives up to their own lofty standards, but sets a new high-water mark for what DH is capable of.
“We’ve been extremely underwhelmed with metal for the last five years or so, and that’s been the fuel to create this record,” Clark explains. “With an extreme over-saturation of false, fleeting, trend-hopping noise in today’s metal scene, we had to make something we’ve been longing to hear. Something truly meaningful and artistic. Something our fans would love and something that will turn the heads of those who have ignored us for the past decade.”
The Ladies With Soul Workshops
Paul Bothner Music will be hosting The Ladies With Soul Workshop at the N1 Super Store in Goodwood, on the 14 April 2012 and 21 April 2012. Both workshops will run from 11 am to 12 pm. These workshops will be presented by our friends, the Paul Bothner Music Endorsees, Charlie King and Natasha Meister.
Charlie fell in love with the blues and co-formed The Diamondback Blues Band in 2009, playing at various venues and festivals, in and around Cape Town. She’s recently embarked on her solo career. Over the last couple of years, she’s guest performed with some of the top South African Blues artists, such as The Boulevard Blues Band, Piet Botha, Dan Patlansky and Kevin Floyd. With musical influences such as Etta James, Koko Taylor, Janis Joplin, BB King and many more, there’s a lot to look forward to! Her velvety vocal tones and the swampy slide guitar make for powerful Blues at Bothner’s. Don’t miss it!
Soon after her first overseas tour in Dubai, with Jimmy Thomas, Michael Roach and The Crossroads band, Natasha became the first South African woman to be endorsed by Fender.Natasha’s recently released You Tube/Facebook videos have created a maelstrom locally and abroad. After just one viewing of the video clips, master luthier Martin Seeliger, of Lakewood Guitars, set up an endorsement deal!! Her first album ‘Halfway”, produced by Roger Bashew and consisting entirely of her own compositions, has just been completed and is available as an indie release.
New Release: Fire Through The Window – Live Long EP
FIRE THROUGH THE WINDOW have just released their new EP – LIVE LONG. The first track from the EP, Long Gone, as well as its music video was released in February. The music video is currently at nr. 3 on the MK Top 10 Music Videos Chart.
“This is the first time we’ve tried putting out an EP and we have loved the process. We had written loads of material and by giving ourselves a 6 song cut-off, we really got down to what we thought were the absolute best songs.”
The EP was produced by Jacques du Plessis from The Audio Cabin (also from Wrestlerish) and mastered by a new studio in Seattle, USA called Spectre. LIVE LONG is a digital release and will be available on all major online outlets.
“Expect a progression in song writing and production, FTTW 2.0 if you will. We’re all a little older, a little wiser and a little more confident in what we’re writing. Maybe the songs aren’t quite as upbeat and innocent as they were, but the FTTW vibe is still there. This is just the next chapter.”
FIRE THROUGH THE WINDOW see LIVE LONG as a step up from their previous releases. The recording and production is better, the mastering is better and ultimately they believe the music is better. In general, the songs are slightly more serious and edgy than their previous releases. and theyʼll go as far as to say they are more technical and more layered. Although LIVE LONG still contains elements of their previously released music, it a whole reflects growth and progress as musicians.
“We’re all growing up a little, most of us are in our late twenties now and the way you think about life in general kinda changes. There’s an underlying theme of ‘now or never’ in a lot of the songs.”
Track List: LIVE LONG
1. Heads Down Low
2. Give-Take
3. Riot
4. Bones
5. 1985
6. Long Gone

Long Gone by Fire Through the Window
LIVE LONG is part of a two EP-release. The second EP is scheduled for release around August 2012 and will be called PROSPER. LIVE LONG was chosen as title, seeing as it works on its own and refers to the longevity as an artist within the music industry, but also makes sense when you put the two EPʼs together as a whole.
FIRE THROUGH THE WINDOW will be launching LIVE LONG in Cape Town on the 26th of April at Bohemia in Stellenbosch, and on the 27th of April at Zula Bar.

This will also be an opportunity for young, up-and-coming artists to share the stage and professional polish of a production of this magnitude. GrandWest, Grand Arena is the chosen venue to host this event. The vision is to have GrandWest as the home of this annual celebration – with one or more benefactors each year.

MR CAT & THE JACKAL Back In Cape Town
MR CAT & THE JACKAL is back for performances in Cape Town after winning the MK Award for Best Animation / SFX for their video Bad Man He Comin’ on the 23rd of March.MR CAT & THE JACKAL to perform at The Dirty Bounce Manifesto!
Friday / 13 April 2012 / Klein Libertas Theatre / Stellenbosch / 21h00 / R50
Friday / 20 April 2012 / Mercury / Cape Town / 21h00 / R50
Joining them on the nights, are The Nomadic Orchestra and The Bone Collectors. The Nomadic Orchestra with their balkan fusion dance beats, will push through the barriers of your struggling conscious mind and make you move your arse. Mr Cat & the Jackal will bring new stories of apocalyptic events with some humour and homemade instruments to show all your friends. The Bone Collectors will be slinging their home brewed brand of ribcage-rattling offbeat boogie and blue hues.
Some time ago, in the early stages of the bands career, The Bone Collectors played some shows with Mr. Cat & The Jackal. This later led to The Bone Collectors deciding on recording at The Fresh Meat Studio, Mr. Cat & The Jackal’s home base, run by Jacques du Plessis. It was clear to Roland Hunter, frontman of The Bones, that this was the right creative space for them to record, and so embarked on the journey, which should be completed soon.
The Nomadic Orchestra was first exposed to Mr. Cat & The Jackal at Rocking The Daisies in 2010 when they played before Mr. Cat at the ‘New World Beat Barn’. The following year Ma’or Harris of Balkanology and The Beanstalk events management company, who organized the New World music line-up, approached both bands and suggested they do a collaboration show. Since then, the bands have enjoyed several successful collaboration shows. These shows were well received not only at RTD 2011, but also at some Balkanology parties and even a wedding.
The Nomadic Orchestra and The Bone Collectors are firstly connected by a shared member, Gabriel (Gawie) du Toit, but also enjoy each others‘ style and performances and have played some gigs together.
Other than these obvious ties, there is a definite freshness to these three acts that instantly put them in the same group. A general disregard for what is supposed to be ‘commercially viable’ music and a love for the unique and scarce. This will be an event to see and hear live, as it wont happen again soon.
Four sets, three bands, two venues and one big dirty bouncing party. The fourth set culminating in a collaboration between all three bands. If you’re into Balkan be sure not to miss it!
VanFokKingTasties: Acoustic Album and Tour
“It’s like a buddy-holiday with tunes! Good times!” Pierre Greeff
VanFokKingTasies are aKING, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Van Coke Kartel
Four of South Africa’s most well-known bands are coming together to deliver the VanFokKingTasties Acoustic album (Akoestiese album). Van Coke Kartel, Fokofpolisiekar, aKING and Die Heuwels Fantasties are each creating two acoustic versions of old favourites and will also introduce a brand new track each on the album.
The album will be released by Supra Familias at the end of April or the very beginning of May. The guys will take to the road to launch this album. VanFokKingTasties presents a rare opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the album and the shows together.
aKING, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Van Coke Kartel have been nominated for SAMA Awards this year. aKING and Van Coke Kartel received nominations in the ‘Best Rock Album’ category and Die Heuwels Fantasties was nominated in the ‘Best Alternative Album’ category.
A little bit about the tracks on the album:
VAN COKE KARTEL
Voor ons stof word: “This was the biggest single from the ‘Skop, Skiet en Donner’ album. It is a mellower version of the original track.”
Buitenkant II: “A dark and melancholy version with violin and cello.”
Almal is bang – new track: “This is VCK’s new hit. The tune has an old school rock feeling, but can also remind you of the grunge era. Who’s afraid? Everyone is afraid.”
FOKOFPOLISIEKAR
Vasbeslote Korporasie Deel 1: “This is a lekker hard song from the album ‘Swanesang’. We thought that it would be interesting to make this song mellow. We are going to keep this track simple and eerie.”
Dagdronk – new track: “A new happy song. It is the first time in four years that we are writing a song together, so it will be different from the other songs. Maybe like ‘Vasbeslote Korporasie Deel 2’ or ‘’ ‘Íllusie van Veiligheid’.”
The third Fokofpolisiekar song is still cloaked in mystery and will be announced at a later stage.
aKING
Facebrick Constellations: “This was an older song that always had the potential to be a nice folk-rock song. It turned out like a story-telling cowboy song. Pierre-Arnold Theron and Jacques du Plessis from ‘Mr Cat and the Jackal’ joined us on percussion and piano.”
In the twilight: “We have only released this song online. It was cool to re-work this song without the choir and to bring it back to our band’s sound. Jacques and Pierre from ‘Mr Cat and the Jackal’ added texture on percussion and garden saw.”
Dead End Ave. – new song: “This is a song that I (Laudo) wrote over the holidays. It is a feel-good folk song about two lovers who are at a crossroad in their lives.”
DIE HEUWELS FANTASTIES
In en Uit: “We approached this song in a ‘Shins’ manner, with a bit of a swing.”
Nare Kaskenades: “This song was originally written on acoustic guitar and then it became a hard dance number on our first album. We like the song in its original format and other people may enjoy it that way too.”
Tyd (working title) – new track: “It’s not completely finished yet, but Hunter will sing on this song. It’s our new song!”

The unique Makabra Ensemble live movie soundtrack project
Meet The Makabra Ensemble
With the recent accolades of THE ARTIST, the attention has been directed at the magic of the silent film again.
Since 2005 THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE has been resurrecting classic silent Horror films by creating brand new soundtracks for them and performing it live to the screen.
THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE is the brainchild of Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg of the Cape Town based Industrial-Metal band TERMINATRYX
They are also the creators and festival-directors of the annual South African HORRORFEST Film Festival every Halloween season
Since its inception in 2005, in addition to a wide range of movies and a literary feature, they incorporated the unique highlight of screening a classic silent Horror movie and performing a brand new, original soundtrack live to the screen, created by TERMINATRYX and various talented friends. In addition to Paul and Sonja, these musicians include Simon “Fuzzy” Ratcliffe (LARK, 1931 RAYGUN), Sean Ou Tim (MR. SAKITUMI, MAX NORMAL, LARK), and violin virtuoso Matthijs Van Dijk (UCT graduate & SAMRO bursary winner).
Sometimes additional musical guests are incorporated, which have included Max Starke, Lara Block, Francois Breytenbach Blom & others.
MAKABRA ENSEMBLE soundtracks across the last 8 years (performed at the S.A. HORRORFEST, OPPI KOPPI MUSIC FESTIVAL and SOUND & MOTION WHITE ROOM SESSIONS) have included vivid historical movies like:
Nosferatu (Germany, 1922)
The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (Germany, 1920)
H両n (Sweden, 1922)
Maciste In Hell (Italy, 1925)
The Phantom Of The Opera (USA, 1925)
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (USA, 1920)
For 2012 there are two silent classics lined-up for new MAKABRA ENSEMBLE soundtracks, but these are still under wraps.
The blend of the vast musical influences and abilities of these collaborators result in the creation of a unique, passionate and awe-inspiring soundtrack, breathing new life into these cinematic milestones.
Instruments utilized for these performances include everything from electric guitar, bass, and violin, to voice, programming, samples, various wind instruments, keyboards, soundFX, live drums, percussion, the theremin, samples & more, resulting in a mesmerizing and unforgettable audio-visual experience.
All of these classics with their new MAKABRA ENSEMBLE soundtracks are set for DVD release, with “Terminatryx / Nosferatu” already available on DVD, feat. the full movie with its new soundtrack, recorded live at its premiere, plus many extras (incl. the dark short film “imPERFECTION”, Makabra Ensemble live performance extracts, Terminatryx features, music videos and photo galleries).

Natasha Meister releases her first album titled Half Way
Soulful, honest, passionate.
Natasha Meister’s debut album “Half Way” has just been released independently and is set to be launched alongside Gavin Minter’s new offering at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town on the 20th of April. Audiences can also look forward to the upcoming music video for her single “Safe in the Silence”, which is currently being filmed in Cape Town.
Touted as one of South Africa’s ‘bright young talents’ (with a voice that will leave a room in awe and guitar skills said to be reminiscent of John Mayer), Meister‘s sound is a refreshing change of pace in an industry that has become characterised by over-production and an ‘one size fits all’ approach to the nurturing of new talent. She currently fronts the Natasha Meister Band, which includes Roger Bashew (bass) and Paul Tizzard (drums). The trio first met each other at a jam at the old Decodance in Woodstock, where Bashew and Tizzard (known at the time as ‘The Lonesharks’) were performing with Dave Ferguson. Meister started the evening as a solo artist but walked out, after having performed an impromptu set with The Lonesharks, with the makings of the Natasha Meister Band.
Canadian-born, Meister is the offspring of South African expats who recently returned to the Mother Continent, trailing their exceptionally talented younger daughter who has since grown into a full-blown musical prodigy. So much so, that aside from being endorsed by Paul Bothner (SA), Lakewood (Germany), and Moody Leather (USA), she also recently got the nod from Fender, which makes her the first ever Fender-endorsed female musician in the whole of Africa.
Young she may be, but Meister is already a veteran of the SA music scene, boasting among her festival appearances highly successful performances at Splashy Fen, Cape Acoustic and Folk Show CTICC, Synergy, Woordfees, Table Mountain Blues Summit, Big Blues Fest, Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts and more. She has also travelled internationally with Jimmy Thomas and Michael Roach of Crossroads Band (UK/USA) and recently collaborated with Locnville on a track named “Staring at the world outside”.
Fellow musician Ard Matthews heaps praise on this wunderkind: “I heard Natasha for the first time in December 2011 and was blown away by her distinctive voice and raw talent. The world will hear about her pretty soon I suspect.” And it’s not just Matthews that seem to think so – the warm reception her album has received thus far suggests that her trademark soulful sound has made a huge impact on discerning SA audiences.
Natasha Meisterwill introduce her first album with a tour in April/May/June 2012:

Brandi Carlile’s 4th album, Bear Creek set for June 5 release
On June 5, Columbia Records will release singer-songwriter-guitarist Brandi Carlile’s fourth studio album, Bear Creek. Carlile, hailed as “the best voice in indie rock” by Paste Magazine, will tour extensively in support of the record. She’ll kick off a series of six dates with Dave Matthews Band on June 26 and headline the 9,450-seat Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO on July 14. Brandi is best known in South Africa as the voice behind the song ‘The Story’ which is the soundtrack to the TRACKER TV campaign that has run on SA TV for the past 2 years.
“That Wasn’t Me,” the first single from Bear Creek, will go to radio on Monday, 2 April. The soulful piano-based track showcases the warmth and subtle power of Carlile’s vocals. It is the cornerstone of an earthy collection that embraces all of her musical influences – folk, pop, country, rock, gospel and blues. From the spirited “Hard Way Home” and chilling country blues of “Raise Hell” to the poignant “Rise Again” and ethereal “Just Kids,” Carlile manages to be at once plainspoken and poetic. The rich imagery of “Keep Your Heart Young” evokes childhood dreams with such unerring accuracy it is apt to elicit renewed vows to never grow up while “Save Part Of Yourself” and “100” wistfully underscore the lifetime impact of a lost love.
Named for the studio where most of the album was recorded – Bear Creek Studios, which is housed in a converted early 20th century barn near Carlile’s hometown of Seattle – it features her longtime band mates: Tim and Phil Hanseroth (“The Twins,” who co-wrote many of the songs with Carlile and play guitar and bass respectively), drummer/percussionist Allison Miller and cellist Josh Neumann plus Dave Palmer on keyboards and Jeb Bows on violin and mandolin. Drummer Matt Chamberlain guests on several tracks.
GRAMMY® winning engineer/producer/mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Queens of the Stone Age) and Brandi and The Twins produced the Bear Creek Studios sessions. Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack) and Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Emmylou Harris) produced three tracks at Tragedy/Tragedy Studios in Nashville, TN.
Bear Creek follows Carlile’s 2011 live album, Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony, which the Seattle Times called “breathtaking.” It was recorded during the band’s sold-out two-night stand at the prestigious venue in November 2010. To date, Carlile has sold over 800,000 albums and has played over 700 live shows.
Her self-titled debut landed her on Rolling Stone’s Top 10 list of artists to watch and she has steadily built a loyal fanbase. Her sophomore album, The Story, was produced by multiple GRAMMY® winner T Bone Burnett and led to a new fan in Elton John. Elton John then appeared on a track on her 2009 album, Give Up the Ghost, which was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin.
Carlile has toured with the likes of Ray LaMontagne, Chris Isaak, The Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow and long time fan Dave Matthews Band. Her songs have been heard in such television shows as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Good Wife,” “American Idol,” and “Parenthood,” and in advertising campaigns by General Motors (2008 U.S. Olympic ad), Hilton Hotels and JC Penney for Ralph Lauren.
