Creating Performance Excellence By Georg Voros
“I found this book to be an exceptional example of the wonders of realizing ones goals and ultimately, one more part of ones huge potential.”
- Greg Hadjiyorki Georgiades – Musician, BA(Psyc,Soc) Hons(Psyc) MA(Clin Psyc)
You’re only as good as your last gig!
This inspiring NEW book by renowned performer, educator and author Georg Voros focuses on the essential tools needed to deliver your best performance every time. His RPD process of performance greatly increases understanding of how to effectively structure preparation for a performance of any kind, and his tried and tested ‘Blank piece of paper’ technique offers greater clarity in sorting out not only performance related issues, but general life issues.
The information offered in his book is based on personal experience. He didn’t simply ‘lift’ the content from other sources because he thought it made good sense. The methods and principles in this book are sourced from many years of across the board experience that has taken Georg around the world.
A unique aspect of this book is that there are no ‘numbered’ chapters. The chapters are based on the actual word PERFORMANCE. 11 letters make up this word, therefore there 11 chapters in this book. Each chapter contains an essential performance tool based on the appropriate letter. Georg feels that by structuring the book in this way that he had to dig deeper to match the information with each letter. Here is a list of the 11 chapters:
P – PASSION
E – ENERGY
R – RESEARCH
F – FOCUS
O – ORGANIZE
R – REPETITION
M – MASTER
A – ASSIMILATE
N – NOW
C – CONFIDENCE
E – EXPRESSION
This book is intended not only for people involved in the performing arts industry, but indeed anyone and everyone as we are all required to ‘perform’ in our everyday lives, regardless of the chosen career or field of study.
‘Creating… performance excellence’ – the road to start delivering your best performance, every time…

“Pitchclip’ wins Best in Show Honours at 2012 winter NAMM
The Korg Pitchclip clip-on guitar tuner has been awarded a “Best in Show” honor during the annual panel presented on Day 4 of the NAMM convention. The panel was moderated by Music Inc. magazine’s Frank Alkyer and a select group of music products industry experts who cast their votes in four categories.
Pitchclip was honored in the “Best Accessory or Add-On” category, and was selected by Tim Pratt, co-owner of Dietze Music. Pratt commented that the clip-on tuners are inexpensive and come in a variety of colors. He also noted that customers might buy more than one Pitchclip to represent the colors of their favorite sports teams or just their favorite colors.
The Korg Pitchclip is a highly accurate, chromatic, clip-on tuner with a low-profile design and high-visibility display. Its reversible display allows it to be conveniently positioned either in front of or behind the guitar’s headstock.

The Music Business Master-class
Places are still available in the Music Business Master-Class as advertised last year. The Academy of Sound Engineering, in conjunction with David Chislett and Nick Matzukis, are proud to present the Music Business Master-class (MBM): the one-stop business course for the modern musician trying to make it in the new music industry.
The industry is abuzz with talk of how the music business has changed, how no-one needs a record deal anymore, and how easy it is to do everything yourself as an independent. The problem is however, that there is not enough information readily available for average South African musicians to empower themselves to take advantage of the situation. That is all set to change.
Many course and ideas have surfaced, but the MBM is the one where you can find out everything in one place, taught by two highly-respected industry personalities in a professional music environment.
Presented by Nick Matzukis and David Chislett, under the auspices of the Academy of Sound Engineering, the MBM is a two-month skills programme that covers everything from contracts and contract law, to marketing and the use of the digital arena. It is the only truly comprehensive course available that will empower musicians and managers of any level to seize control of their careers by understanding the business and then being able to take advantage of the new business terrain in the music industry. This course, pitched at the highest level, is designed to teach you everything you need to know about making money out of the music industry.
The programme covers:
Getting started: thinking about your music
Artist agreements: steering your project
Income streams
Planning for Success
Marketing start
The digital arena marketing, reach
Business Models
Industry overview key players (SA and internationals)
Royalties
Contractual Principles
The Record Deal and its variants
The Publishing Contract and its variants
The Artist Management Agreement and its variants; Copyright
With a one-off introductory offer of R5 950.00, the MBM is now available.
The programme takes place 2 nights a week for 2 months at the ASE campus in Auckland Park from MARCH 2012. The course fee includes tuition, some working materials, a copy of Nick Matzukis’ Book “South African Music Law And Contracts“ and a copy of David Chislett’s Book “1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The SA Music Industry.”

Katy Perry relies on DPA’s headset mics for California Dreams tour
Katy Perry’s engineering team relies on DPA Microphones’ 4088 cardioid headsets for all the pop superstar’s live performances, including her current California Dreams world tour. With the fast-paced, high-action set mechanics of the tour, Perry’s front-of-house engineer Peter Keppler needed a mic that could adapt to any situation. The smooth design of the DPA 4088, which makes the mic almost invisible, combined with its ability to eliminate feedback and background noise, make it the ideal choice for a high-octane tour like Perry’s.
“When selecting a microphone, I wanted something that would provide a well-balanced, open and airy sound for Katy,” says Keppler. “She’s a strong singer with a great voice and I thought finding a good headset mic would be a challenge. From the moment we tried the DPA 4088, I knew the sound was no longer going to be a problem.”
During Thinking of You, Perry stands atop a pink cloud that allows her to fly out over the audience playing an acoustic guitar. During this performance, Perry is in front of the main PA, which can be a potentially disastrous sonic scenario regarding feedback.
“The off axis rejection performance of the DPA 4088 was a lot better than anything else I’d ever heard,” Keppler explains. “All the headset mics I’d previously used sounded very unnatural — either muffled or very thin and boxy, and feedback problems were terrible. The DPA 4088 solved all of these issues. Her audience shows her a lot of appreciation, and they get especially loud when she flies over the crowd during Thinking of You, which also happens to be the quietest song in the show. The DPA 4088 has come through time and time again when I really needed to get Katy’s voice above the level of the audience. The gain before feedback is excellent.”
The DPA 4088, which Perry uses exclusively as her headset vocal microphone, is especially useful during the song Hot N Cold, where she changes her outfit seven times. Since this would be impossible with a handheld, Keppler selected the DPA 4088 because it could withstand the abuse, while allowing Perry the freedom to move about the stage.
“For Katy, the requirements were that the mic sounded great and was as small, lightweight and inconspicuous as possible,” says Keppler. “We selected the beige-colored version so it’s even less noticeable when she wears it.”
Having worked as FOH engineer for Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie, Keppler knows what it takes to keep the audio running for a live tour. Night after night the 4088 has stood up to the rigors of the road, performing flawlessly.
“The 4088 has held up amazingly well,” concludes Keppler. “Sonically, it always delivers. The hardware and wiring are both surprisingly robust, especially considering the abuse they take on a nightly basis.”
The California Dreams tour continues through Europe into February.

TC-Helicon Introduces VoiceLive Play – A Compact Vocal Wonder for All Singers
Regardless of the starting point, TC-Helicon’s new VoiceLive Play is determined to take singers everywhere to the next level.
VoiceLive Play is a new take on a compact multi effects unit for singers, but it is also so much more. Obviously it is packed with TC-Helicon’s pro-level effects tailored specifically for vocalists and state-of-the-art harmony processing yet it is in the details where ’Play’ really shines. Basically, singers will be catered to as if a dedicated vocal producer was sitting inside the box, always ready to fulfill their every wish and follow their slightest move.
Search. Find. Play.
Operating and navigating VoiceLive Play is a breeze. More than 200 amazing presets can be browsed either by genre or effect type. Many of the factory presets are designed to evoke a wide range of popular songs so singers can feel at home instantly – with more presets to download every month online. Every preset can be taken ‘over the top’ by stepping on the HIT button, which will add effects on top of the basic sound of each preset – perfect for making choruses stand out instantly! Also, selected presets can be stored as Favorites for super fast and easy access.
The Power of Practicing
The only way to really take it to the next level is by practicing, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t also be a lot of fun. VoiceLive Play has a dedicated Practice mode that analyzes singing performance in real-time. Detailed pitch statistics will help singers spot their strengths and point out areas that need more attention.
Singing along is another fun way of practicing, and VoiceLive Play accepts input from external audio sources such as iPods and computers via an AUX In connector or USB. To make it even more fun, VoiceLive Play has a Vocal Cancel feature that makes the performer’s voice stand out over the vocal on the recording. Finally, VoiceLive Play can even listen to the recording and generate harmonies based on the chord progressions of the track.
The Power of Looping
VoiceLive Play is the perfect tool for adventurous singers eager to explore the exciting world of real-time looping. Loops can be created easily on the spot with or without effects, and by adding a TC-Helicon MP-75 microphone, the integrated Mic Control button can be used for full looping remote control.
Versatile Room Mics – A Good Set of Ears
VoiceLive Play has a built in microphone on each side panel, which can be used in several ways. For example, they can add a touch of room ambience that will make the voice more natural and comfortable when using headphones. The mics can also be used for picking up room sound and base the harmony processing on chords on an acoustic guitar or piano playing along for example. Alternatively, they could even be used for recording to a computer via USB.
In short, singers everywhere should prepare to fall in love with their voice!

Tiny Meets Awesome – TC Electronic Introduces PolyTune Mini
The revolutionary PolyTune changes the game once again with an even smaller footprint
Two years ago, TC introduced polyphonic tuning to the world and since then guitarists everywhere have welcomed this next-generation way of tuning with open arms. Now TC reveals the world’s smallest polyphonic tuner: PolyTune® Mini that will fit on any pedal board. Sometimes size actually does matter and in such cases, PolyTune Mini is the perfect solution as no other pedal tuner in the world will take up so little space, which means more room for other pedals.
“When designing PolyTune Mini we set a goal right from the start: We didn’t want to compromise on features in any way,” says TC’s Guitar Product Manager Tore Lynggaard Mogensen. “Despite shrinking it down to a 3rd of the size of the original PolyTune, our engineers did an absolutely incredible job taking all the cool stuff from PolyTune and shrinking it down to a tiny package. It really is the kind of product you have to hold in your hand to truly appreciate the size, build quality and attention to detail.”
PolyTune Mini is based on the exact same technology as the original PolyTune, so like its bigger brother it shows the tuning state of all strings simultaneously by simply strumming the guitar, allowing guitarists to get back to playing in a matter of seconds.
Just like the original PolyTune, PolyTune Mini is among the most precise tuners in the world, tuning with +/- 0.5 cent precision in chromatic mode and +/- 1 cent accuracy in polyphonic mode. Also, it automatically switches between chromatic and polyphonic modes depending on whether all strings are strummed at once or each string is picked individually. Finally, PolyTune Mini features Drop-D and Capo modes as well as True Bypass for zero tone coloration and a super-bright LED display with the same amount of LEDs as the original PolyTune.
PolyTune – Tuning Distilled!
PolyTune Mini Main Features
• Ultra-small Footprint – Will Fit on Any Pedal Board
• PolyTune – Tune All Strings Simultaneously
• +/- 0.5 Cent Tuning Accuracy
• True Bypass w/ Silent Tuning
• Super-bright LED Display
• Up to 5 Semitones Flat Tunings
• Drop-D and Capo Tuning

New Drum Programme At COPA SA with Top SA Drummer
The Campus of Performing Arts South Africa (COPA SA) has introduced a new drum programme run by one of South Africa’s top drummers, Barry van Zyl.

The lessons are compiled by van Zyl and will complement the existing COPA drumming course, giving students a further dimension to their drumming skills.
Van Zyl has a long career as a session musician both in SA and abroad working for a diverse array of artists such as Johnny Clegg, Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Soweto Gospel Choir and Die Antwoord. TC Electronic’s Revolutionary TonePrint App Now Available for Android
A few months ago TC Electronic launched its truly mind-blowing TonePrint® App for iPhone. Now the magic has been successfully ported for Android devices!
The new app compiles all TonePrints for TC Electronic’s TonePrint enabled guitar pedals in one place and allows users to ‘beam’ new TonePrints to their pedals in a matter of seconds. The idea behind the technology is as simple as it is ingenious: Each TonePrint has been converted to a unique-sounding magnetic impulse that can be beamed via the phone’s internal speaker, through the pickup of a guitar and directly to a TonePrint pedal! The sound does not carry any data so it doesn’t matter if users are in a raucous arena or a library – no other sounds will interfere with the data being sent from the phone.
The app contains all TonePrints as mp3 files, which means that no Internet connection is required for beaming TonePrints. The phone’s speaker simply needs to be placed close to a magnetic guitar pickup when beaming, and it literally only takes seconds for the app to perform its magic. Best of all, the TonePrint app is completely free of charge.
“We are extremely proud to present a super-flexible solution that allows all guitarists with TonePrint pedals and an Android or iOS device to truly explore the ever-expanding list of great and unique TonePrints created by some of the best guitar players in the world,” says Guitar Product Manager at TC Electronic, Tore Lynggaard Mogensen. “Now great tones and tons of musical inspiration can be beamed and enjoyed on-the-spot as well as on-the-fly.”

The TC Guitar Team Celebrating PolyTune’s 2 Year Anniversary
TC Electronic Celebrates PolyTune’s 2 Year Anniversary with a ‘Mini’ Price for PolyTune for iPhone
TC Electronic launched its groundbreaking PolyTune pedal tuner two years ago, and since then, guitar players have embraced the concept with open arms. To celebrate, TC offers the iPhone version of PolyTune at a ‘Mini’ price.
The PolyTune pedal changed the game for guitarists all over the world in January 2009. With the new polyphonic tuning technology, tuning became faster and easier than ever. By simply strumming all strings simultaneously, PolyTune displays the tuning state of each string in a single, easy-to-read view. This way of tuning guitars and basses allows for much faster tuning – and for getting back to the all-important thing: Playing!
Many great artists have also picked up on the idea of polyphonic tuning, and today TC PolyTune pedals are sitting comfortably in the tour rigs of rock stars like John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Guthrie Govan and more.
Later, TC Electronic launched the PolyTune concept as an iPhone app, which is the perfect solution for acoustic guitars without a pickup. The app is a 1:1 port of the original PolyTune pedal, and it received an overwhelming response. Now, TC offers this ground-breaking app at just $0.99 until Thursday 19 January 2012. Normal price is $4.99.

Legendary Left Hook Rockin’ Bluesman Tours UK with Carlsbro
Gregg who is among the greatest ever left hook players – he does not restring the guitar, simply playing his right hand Strat upside down – has been a leading US session man since the mid 70’s. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, The Gap Band, Spenser Davis and even the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra; most famously as lead guitarist on Jackson’s 1984 Victory Tour.
More recently he has been a fixture of the blues circuit and international festivals, earning the accolade of “King of the Rockin’ Blues” from the Monterey Bay Blues Festival. Gregg has been playing clubs across England and Scotland on an eight date tour, from 31 October until 19 November, with regular UK accompanist Spencer Lee Horton on drums.
Gregg is familiar with Carlsbro amps, having previously demonstrated for the company and on arrival in the UK, arranged for delivery of the 50 Top for the tour. However the new 50 Top was something he hadn’t bargained for, exclaiming, “Whatever you guys have done in the development of the 50 Top since I last played one, is outstanding. It’s a completely different sound from the previous models I’ve used. My experience with the rig was an absolute pleasure and everywhere I played, people raved about the sound.” The sound engineer on the first date of the tour, at the famous Monday Blues Club in Oxford, added his praise, saying it was “the best guitar sound I’ve heard in 10 years of running sound at the Monday Blues”.
The LH1200 – 50 TOP DC is a classic ‘True Valve Amp’ inspired by the much loved original 50 Top.
The new twin channel amp head has switchable channels & two master volumes which are footswitchable. The valve complement of 4x 12AXT’s and 2x EL84’s gives you 50w of incredible power @ 8 or 16Ω’s. The preamp has a host of feature benefits including, Hi and Low sensitivity Jack inputs, 3 band EQ using Silvered Mica Capacitors, ‘Sleep Mode’ automatic muting with no input present.

With the new version 2.35, dedicated processing and presets for working within ITU BS.1770-2, EBU R128, ATSC A/85 and TR-B32 environments is instantly available. The new version even lowers an already impressive latency of 1.8 ms to only 0.8 ms.
Trickle-down Processing
The most audio-friendly and the least work-intensive way to simulcast to multiple platforms is known as trickle-down processing. P2 version 2.35 includes trickle-down presets for Mobile and iPod platforms within ITU BS.1770-2, EBU R128, ATSC A/85 and TR-B32 environments; still at 48 bit resolution and still at a latency of only 0.8 ms.
Broadcast Bricks
TC Meters, TC Processors and Dynaudio speakers are coherent bricks in an ever-changing broadcast puzzle. P2 is a natural part of a closed loop that also includes:
Radar Meters: LM2, LM5D, LM6, TM7 and TM9.
Processors: System 6000 MKII, DB2, DB4 MKII and DB8 MKII.
Monitor Controllers: BMC-2, System 6000, AIR.
Logging Systems: LM2, DB4 MKII and DB8 MKII.
Finally, the Icon application, included with P2, even provides a common control environment for more than 30 devices, accessible from a PC, a Mac or an Icon hardware remote for ultimate flexibility.

LM6 Radar Loudness Meter Support for the New AAX Plug-in Format
TC Electronic Announces LM6 Radar Loudness Meter Support for the New AAX Plug-in Format
TC confirms that its cross-platform LM6 Radar Loudness Meter, scheduled for launch December 2011, will also support Avid’s new AAX plug-in format.
At the recent AES Convention in New York City, Avid presented a new plug-in format for Pro Tools 10: AAX (Avid Audio eXtension). One of the most frequently asked questions for third-party plug-in developers during the show was how soon they would be able to support this new format. TC is proud to announce that its LM6 Radar Loudness Meter, which was also revealed at AES, will in fact support the new AAX format right from the start.
LM6 Radar Loudness Meter will be available in VST, AU, RTAS and AAX Native versions December 2011.

TC Electronic Presents Michael ‘Padge’ Paget TonePrints for Vortex Flanger and Flashback Delay
Michael ‘Padge’ Paget, lead guitarist of metal sensation Bullet for My Valentine, creates personal ‘Sunny Day’ and ‘Tears’ TonePrints.
At first Michael set out to make an extreme tone for TC’s Vortex Flanger pedal, but once the creative process started, inspiration pointed him in a different direction. Rather than going to extremes, Michael ended up creating a subtle and slow-ocean-breeze-on-a-sunny-day kind of tone. As always TC lets the TonePrint artists name their own TonePrints, and I this case, Michael found it natural to simply call it ‘Sunny Day’.
For the Flashback Delay pedal, Michael decided to go for a nice analog delay with a bit of chorus on the repeated notes – a beautiful and evocative tone he decided to name ‘Tears’.
Michael ‘Padge’ Paget is the lead guitarist of the Welsh heavy metal band Bullet for my Valentine that has sold more than 2,5 million albums worldwide. When touring the world with Bullet for My Valentine, Michael also uses a TC G-System for effects and control of his live rig, and to him it simply eliminates the hassle of constantly having to do the stomp-box-tap-dancing on the stage.
Michael’s Sunny Day TonePrint for Vortex Flanger is now available as a free download on TC Electronic’s website or as part of the free TonePrint App for iPhone.
Finally, TC Electronic gives away a Flashback Delay and a Vortex Flanger – both signed by Michael ‘Padge’ Paget. The winner will be drawn 2nd December 2011. To take part in the competition, just connect with TC on Facebook.
Alex Hutchings SA Clinic Tour 2011
Announcing the South African dates for Alex Hutchings‘ Guitar Technology Tour
TC Electronic launches groundbreaking TonePrint
TC Electronic launched its groundbreaking TonePrint® concept earlier this year. Now, a truly mind-blowing technology adds fuel to the fire of creativity and flexibility!
The new iPhone app compiles all TonePrints for TC Electronic’s TonePrint enabled guitar pedals in one place and allows users to ‘beam’ new TonePrints to their pedals in a matter of seconds. The idea behind the technology is as simple as it is ingenious: Each TonePrint has been converted to a unique-sounding magnetic impulse that can be beamed via an iPhone’s internal speaker, through the pickup of a guitar and directly to a TonePrint pedal! The sound does not carry any data so it doesn’t matter if users are in a raucous arena or a library – no other sounds will interfere with the data being sent from the iPhone.
The app contains all TonePrints as mp3 files, which means that no Internet connection is required for beaming TonePrints. The iPhone’s speaker simply needs to be placed close to a magnetic guitar pickup when beaming, and it literally only takes seconds for the app to perform its magic. Best of all, the TonePrint app is completely free of charge. The app is currently available for iPhone, but a version for Android phones is under development and will be available in December 2011.
“When we launched the TonePrint concept, we knew that we eventually had to come up with a solution that made swapping TonePrints easier,” says Guitar Product Manager at TC Electronic, Tore Lynggaard Mogensen. “Most guitarists have their pedal board in a rehearsal space and their computer at home. Some may have brought a laptop, but the process still needed to be made faster and more intuitive to really take advantage of the great potential that this artist-driven concept has to offer. We are extremely proud to present a super-flexible solution that allows all guitarists with TonePrint pedals and an iPhone to truly explore the ever-expanding list of great and unique TonePrints created by some of the best guitar players in the world. Now great tones and tons of musical inspiration can be beamed and enjoyed on-the-spot as well as on-the-fly.”
For decades, TC Electronic has provided innovative tools for guitarists. Its team of engineers have created world-class effects of all types and developed the world’s first polyphonic tuner. In January 2011, TC Electronic introduced a series of five new guitar pedals that were TonePrint enabled: Flashback Delay, Hall of Fame Reverb, Corona Chorus, Vortex Flanger and Shaker Vibrato. All of these pedals are great-sounding in their own right, but they also offer the possibility of uploading custom settings created by guitar greats like John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Paul Gilbert, Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal and countless others. These TonePrint artists were given access to tweak any effect parameter imaginable – not just the ones represented by physical knobs on the actual pedals. As a consequence, whole new tones could be created and therefore, TonePrints are highly personal and unique sounding – just the way each artist wanted the pedal of his or her dream to sound.

Studio Gear: MCX24 Console
Studio Gear
Studiomaster consoles have a long and spotted history that is known to as many professionals in the audio field as it is not. Established in 1976 in a chicken shed in Cheshunt, England under the name Recording Studio Design (RSD), the company was originally created as an answer to the demand for high power amplifiers for PA systems which were at that time being powered by expensive American brands. Before they knew it, and from a little help from the endorsement of their amplifiers by Pink Floyd, RSD grew into building mixing consoles, culminating in a focus on the studio market under the name Studiomaster. Eventually their name and brand grew considerably, producing notable mentions over the years like the Series 2, Mixdown, P7 and T24 studio consoles.
Nowadays the company is based in Bedfordshire, England and after building a new manufacturing facility in the Far East, their product line is bigger than ever, including products like line arrays, digital DSP units and studio monitors. Showcasing their mixer range is currently the MCX class of medium format mixing consoles, aimed at both the live and studio markets.
Construction
The MCX range is available in five sizes: 12,14, 24, 32 and 48 channels. They all are ruggedly built; employing a stiff steel chassis all contained within a high quality wheeled branded flight case, which comes standard with the MCX24 and above. What caught my eye about this console is that the channels are installed in 8 channel modules, along with a modular master section. This makes servicing a lot easier and for some reason gives the impression that they are of a higher quality than other brands in a similar class, such as Mackie or Soundcraft.
Overall the build quality seems solid and robust. The knobs feel rooted to their bases – some knobs on certain consoles can seem flimsy – and the 100mm faders ride smoothly and feel well seated. I would certainly say that these consoles were built to take abuse in a live environment but still retain a feature set worthy of the studio.
Channels
Although features like channel count will certainly vary depending on which MCX console you get, the overall features are the same, particularly within the master section.
Inputs
Focusing on the MCX24, you get 24 mic inputs and four stereo inputs. On each mic channel you will find a four band sweepable EQ, mute and listen (solo) facilities, a high pass filter (18dB/oct @ 80Hz), phantom power, and a pad. It is not specified how many dB the pad cuts and I found it curious that the pad was only reserved for the line inputs. The EQ on the stereo channels has a fixed frequency per band, which is pretty standard for mixers of this level.
What’s handy about the stereo channels is that they also include a mic input, which can be used simultaneously with the stereo inputs, giving a total of three inputs per channel. This is indeed flexible. The mic inputs supply the now standard 60dB of gain; the mono line inputs get 40dB, and the stereo inputs 12dB which is more than enough for most needs. Inserts are found on every mono channel as well for easy connection of outboard gear.
Other inputs include a 2 track input (called a playback input) and a handy talkback input which can be routed to either L-R, group 1-2, or any of the auxes with the push of a button.
Studio Master MCX24 Console
“The MCX range of mixers have created a new level in price performance for the discerning sound engineer, installer, and band.”
Groups, Auxiliaries and Oscillator
The MCX24 supplies four sub-groups that can each be panned individually within the L-R bus when assigned as such for mono or stereo operation. Alternatively they can be used in what is called “Stage Mode” which “swaps the group and mix faders with the auxiliary send controls effectively producing a monitor mixer”. This is a very handy feature that I’m sure rental companies will find alluring.
Every input channel on the mixer can be routed to either the L-R bus or the sub-groups by way of standard routing buttons situated next to the channel faders. Each sub-group also has its own four-tier LED meter, which indicates signal below 0dBu, at 0dBu and +4dBu, and lastly indicating an overload.
Regarding auxiliaries, you get six and all are switchable to be either pre or post fader, which is a welcome feature that is only seen in higher end consoles. Something that made me happy when I first looked at this console is the included oscillator that can be set to put out either pink noise or a 1kHz sine wave.
Both are essential for system calibration and room EQ adjustment and when engaged can be assigned to any of the busses or auxiliaries via the talkback buttons. This is definitely something you do not find on other consoles in the medium format class.
Outputs
The MCX24 has a variety of outputs which suit both the studio and a live situation. Starting with the mono channels, you will find a direct out for each. This is obviously handy if you’re multi-tracking or if you’re making a live recording. As mentioned before, this console was designed to be at home in both live and studio situations and being as such, there is also a monitor out included for easy connection to your studio monitors. There are outputs for all busses including L-R, and sub-groups 1-4. Each bus gets its own insert too, which is great when you want to, for instance, strap a stereo compressor over the stereo drum bus.
When not in Stage Mode there are separate TRS outputs for auxiliaries 1-6. All TRS outputs are balanced. Lastly, there is a stereo recording output using the RCA-type connector and a mono sum output which can be switched to either be fed from the L-R bus or the listen bus.
Master Section
The master section houses all of the master controls and faders for all auxiliaries, sub-groups and busses on the MCX24. Also included are two XLR sockets for two 12V lamps, a headphone output, monitor level control, oscillator level control, and a 12-bar LED meter showing level from -30dBu to overload.
One notable feature that you do not find on many consoles in this class is a mute and listen facility for each sub-group and for the L-R bus. This effectively changes your sub-groups into mute masters.
In Use
I found the MCX24 straightforward and intuitive with all of the features one would need for most if not all mixing and recording situations. The mic preamps sounded clean and uncoloured, although lacking character. This is probably a good thing since a console designed to fit into so many applications would probably benefit from a preamp that is clear and representative.
The EQ sounded particularly good and I felt that it covered the spectrum well with minimal harshness when pushed hard. The oscillator was particularly useful when calibrating and checking the room for inconsistencies and I commend Studiomaster for including it.
Overall the operation was pretty standard for a mixer in this class so anyone that is comfortable on medium format consoles will find it familiar. It was most definitely the little things that made the mixer stand out and I think that it will give other mixers in its class, like the Soundcraft GB series, a run for their money.
Conclusion
The Studiomaster MCX24 is an impressive mixer for this price point. I have absolutely no complaints about it and will even say that it rivals some of the better known and established console manufacturers. Two thumbs up!

Staind
Chapter VII
“There’s no question that the majority of our success has come from some of the softer songs that we’ve done…”
Sixteen years after their inception, melodic hard rockers Staind are still going strong. Surviving nu-metal, metalcore and even the current post-hardcore era, the Massachusetts outfit are always a constant on the charts and playlists of rock fans around the globe. In fact, it seems like all that Aaron Lewis (vocals/guitar), Mike Mushok (guitar) and Johnny April (bass) touch, inevitably turns to gold.
Unlike many modern counterparts, the band have had a regular line-up for most of their entire career – until the recent exit of Jon Wysocki (drums), who left after the recording of their new album. Undeniably, this departure must make things feel a little different in the Staind camp, and the remaining members will have some thinking to do about finding an adequate replacement for Jon.
“Of course…it is definitely different. It wasn’t an easy choice or path,” says guitarist, Mike Mushok. “As of right now, we have our drum tech, Sal Giancarelli, who is also a great drummer, playing drums for us. We have plans to try and do some auditions, possibly towards the end of the year, because we don’t have a lot of time right now.”
Get Heavy!
One of the reasons why the trio might not have much time on their hands is because they’ve just dropped a brand-new self-titled release, their seventh studio album. Refusing to release another collection of soft songs, Staind have promised that their new album will feature harder and heavier material – but why the sudden change?
“We felt it was time. Especially with our last record [2008’s The Illusion of Progress], [where] we experimented and wanted to try something different, and we did that and we were happy with how it turned out,” Mike says, before adding how the band discussed the direction of their next album after TIOP and how they were going to go back to their roots. “I focused on writing heavier songs and making a heavier record. We’re really happy with the end results and how it came out. It’s definitely a return to where we came from, but with a more modern sound.”
It’s actually quite surprising that Staind have gotten heavier now in their old age (snicker), because most bands seem to get softer as their career progresses. Perhaps the band decided that they don’t want to be remembered just for their ballads?
“I definitely consider us a rock band,” Mike laughs, insisting that he hopes that no one considers Staind as just a ballad band. “Even if you go back to our last record, there’s still some heavy songs on there – it’s always been a part of what we do – but there’s no question that the majority of our success has come from some of the softer songs that we’ve done.”
Deadlines and Legacy
Interestingly, for the first time in the band’s history, their record label gave them a deadline for their new album. So, did this deadline make the band feel pressured or did it force them to just deliver a raw record without over-thinking too much?
“That’s a good question,” Mike pauses. “I don’t know if we’ve ever over-thought anything. There’s always pressure when you go to make a record. You always want to do something different and come up with a group of great songs – in that, it creates its own kind of pressure, especially if you’ve had any kind of success. I do think that the pressure was definitely more on this record for that reason. More so for Aaron, as the songs were pretty much done – he writes the lyrics around the music once it’s done. While we were doing it, he was doing his solo thing, so it made for a difficult process, but I really think he stepped up and did a great job. Funny thing with Aaron is that he kind of needs that pressure to get things done.”
In closing, I ask Mike the hypothetical question: if Staind were to end tomorrow, would this to be the album he would want to be remembered for?
“Sure. I’m definitely proud of this record. You have to feel like the last record you’ve put out is the best thing you’ve done. If you don’t feel that way, then the record is probably not done. I do think from all that pressure and turmoil of making this record, something great came from it.”

Shadowclub – Live and Streaming
Shadowclub – Live and Streaming
Shadowclub is a three-piece rock band based in Johannesburg, and have been creating a healthy stir with their debut album Guns and Money. This is a straight-up rock band with a sound reminisce of early 60/70′s rock bands, but with a modern angle. Prosound hosted the Shadowclub who played a live set in the Prosound Demo room, whilst streaming the complete show live via Rhythm100 internet radio.
With such a heavy blend of rock the obvious choice was to utilize the Electro-Voice PA system, complimented by a host of Electro-Voice microphones and Klark Teknik processing. The sound was absolutely great and the bands performance was spot-on, with some exceptionally great feedback from some of the listeners.

South Africa’s independent Vehicle Sales Academy invests in HK Audio Elements
South Africa’s independent Vehicle Sales Academy invests in HK Audio Elements
German speaker manufacturer HK Audio continues to make inroads into the South African event and sound market.
South Africa’s only independent Vehicle Sales Academy, Innermation, has invested in the HK Audio Elements speaker system which was supplied by authorised dealer The Sound Shop.
“We were looking for a scalable system that would suit the multimedia needs in our lecture rooms, with the ability of then matching the components together to form one large system for our road shows,” commented Stefan Vermaak, founder and head of Innermation. “After doing some research I discovered the HK Audio Elements system, which suits our requirements to a tee. The coverage and sound clarity that you get from the Elements system is astounding – better than many systems I have previously worked with and I am sure it will also make an impression at this years’ Johannesburg International Motor Show!”
The HK Audio Elements is an innovative line-source system that links the advantages of modern line-array technology with the easy handling of ultra-compact P.A. systems. Consisting of six components, Elements offers a portable sound reinforcement solution that adapts to the varied needs of the user. Components can be added or removed from the system via E-Connect, a unique new integrated coupler/bus that provides a quick “mix ‘n match” to adapt to any scenario.
“The folk at Innermation were totally impressed with the initial demonstration in the Pro Audio showroom” added Andrew Sorrill, HK Audio Specialist at the local agency Pro Audio. “After using a mid high per side with one sub for their lectures they decided to purchase the complete Elements system for use in all their venues and then build it together for the road shows.”

The Legacy that Leo Fender began in 1946 has continued to be the soul of G&L guitars
The legacy that Leo Fender began in 1946 has continued to be the soul of G&L guitars. Today, G&L is committed to preserving the memory and rich history of Leo Fender, as well as his passion for creating instruments musicians will embrace for decades to come.
The G&L Tribute Series offers the unmistakable G&L tone and sustain, the feel and the innovative features for well under half the price of their U.S.-made G&L counterparts. They’re not budget guitars by any means, but comparable with the best production models of other leading guitar companies, and superior in quality.
The 3 models they have initially received are the Legacy, ASAT Classic and L-2000 Bass
Ø Legacy-RSP-R6995.00
Ø L-2000 Bass-RSP-R8595.00
For TURNKEY PRICES on these wonderful guitars give PETER B a call at Turnkey 011 7928272
Why should you look at G&L Tribute Guitars & what sets these guitars apart from the other guitars ?High Quality Tonewoods – The Tribute guitar bodies are made of high-grade swamp ash, excellent for the rich resonance that results in vibrant guitar tone and ample sustain and its attractive grain looks great under transparent finishes.
Extremely Comfortable Necks
The necks of the Tribute guitars are made of premium hard rock maple and the profiles and fingerboard radiuses match those of the corresponding USA models, so the Tribute guitars have much the same playing feel.Stellar sounding USA-Made Pickups – The Tribute guitars and basses have the same U.S.-made, handwound Magnetic Field Design pickups designed and patented by Leo Fender. They offer individual adjustment of each pole piece, letting the player effectively adjust the output of each string on each pickup. MFD pickups yield about twice the output per wind, making the pickup quieter while allowing a greater overall output. The sound of MFD pickups is slightly warmer with a broader frequency response.
The extremely flexible PTB Tone Control System on the Legacy
This allows independent control over the treble and bass levels of the guitar’s pickups. A typical Strat’s tone controls are just low-pass filters and don’t work on the bridge pickup. With the amazingly flexible PTB, you can dial out the brightness and dial in some extra bass to fatten up the bridge pickup. Or if you find the neck pickup just a bit too fat and warm, dial up the treble and back off on the bass. You’ll wonder how you ever managed with a Strat’s regular tone controls.
The super smooth and sustainful Vibrato System on the Legacy
It is equipped with G&L’s patented Dual-Fulcrum Vibrato. Leo Fender created this design to yield a much smoother, “silky” feel and allows the player to bend notes up as well as down. The press-in tremolo arm allows quick installation and removal, smooth feel, and also allows the player adjust the amount of resistance on the arm. The bridge block is much larger than other guitars in this price range, resulting in increased sustain.
Improved vintage-style Bridge on the ASAT Classic
It uses a traditional “ashtray” style bridge as on a vintage Tele, but has individual brass saddles which offer the classic twang, brightness and sustain without the compromised intonation.
The highly versatile Electronics on the L-2000 Bass
G&L’s Tri-Tone active/ passive electronics feature a highly flexible and simple to use control layout with a 3-way pickup selector, a series/ parallel switch and a preamp control mini-toggle. It makes it easy to dial in the growl of a classic P-Bass or the bite and definition of a good active bass. This bass is excellent at either tone and anything in between!
We Guarantee that you’ll soon be just as impressed at these amazing guitars!
THE K-ARRAY BLUELINE KB-1
K-Array KB-1
Compactness, light-weight design and transportability mark the KB1, and encourage its easy integration into a musician’s kit. In fact one of the KB1’s strengths is its easy-handling. It is equipped with materials and case which enable loading and unloading even with small hatchbacks. It is protected by a padded cover designed to insulate the sub from bumps and scratching. This allows the KB1 to be transported comfortably together with all the cables needed for setup.
The designers of the KB1 have chosen materials which are commonly used for products of a professional quality. Plastic materials have been deliberately avoided in order to preserve the resilience required for professional use. Wood, steel and aluminium are the materials which have been chosen to forge the BlueLine; perfectly matching the characteristic qualities of the K-array brand.
1 module, class D – DSP controlled 120 W x 2 channels (240 watt total – power to mid high)450 W (power to sub)Dynamic limiter, over current, over temp, short circuit
Weighing in at A TOTAL 20 KG’S including a carrying case, the “plug-and-play” KB1 is for a wide range of portable applications.
Setup, configuration, performance
Standard connections like speakon, XLR and jack guarantee that the cabling is easy and familiar to the user. In this way, even in an emergency, the cables provided in the packaging at the moment of purchase can easily be substituted for commonly available cables of the same type.
A 12” subwoofer for bass and eight 3” loudspeakers for medium-high frequencies guarantee elevated performance, preserving the timbre quality of instruments and voices. The configuration using a central pole for the medium-highs makes the KB1 a true line-array from the point of view of sound emission. It emits sound pressure which remains constant even at distance and which covers the listening area which great precision and uniformity.
The presets which process the output sound enable sound optimisation for numerous types of use and varied environments.
All of the characteristics which have been described so far, apart from the facility for modular integration of several KB1s as required, make the system an extremely versatile tool, adaptable as monitors, amplification for solo-artists and, if doubled-up, as a main stereo PA system for an event. A special support which comes with the kit enables the system to be used as a monitor or as a front fill, by laying the medium-high unit horizontally and varying the inclination.

Deep Purple Keyboardist Don Airey Uses HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 16 Digital Live Sound Console for Current U.S. and European Tour
Deep Purple Keyboardist Don Airey Uses HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Si Compact 16 Digital Live Sound Console for Current U.S. and European Tour

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – Deep Purple needs no introduction to rock fans – the iconic riff to “Smoke on the Water” alone is instantly recognizable to anyone not born under a rock. For the last 10 years, Don Airey has been the keyboard player for Deep Purple. Airey has been on the rock scene for more than 25 years, having played on almost 200 albums with artists like Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jethro Tull, ELO, UFO and many others.
Don is using a HARMAN Soundcraft® Si Compact 16 Digital Live Sound Mixer on Deep Purple’s current U.S. and European tours. Gert Sanner, front of house engineer for Deep Purple, notes, “We are in the process of replacing our old mixers because we have two full systems going on tour, and we wanted to have more consistency between the two keyboard rigs. We chose the Si Compact 16 because of the quality of its internal effects, its sound quality and its ease of use.”
“We wanted to be able to take any adjustments to the settings that we did on one rig and transfer them to the other,” Sanner continues. “The Si Compact 16 lets us easily move our settings between consoles, rather than having to manually duplicate all of our reverb, delay and other effects settings every time we make a change.”
“We are also using the console’s MIDI capability by linking specific keyboard sounds to individual Scenes on the desk. This enables us to store particular EQ settings to particular songs, and make the transition from one keyboard rig to the other a lot smoother.”
In addition to the Si Compact 16, Gert Sanner is using a Soundcraft Vi6 digital console for front of house mixing.
“We’re getting great results by working this way,” Sanner concludes. “We are busy hopping from continent to continent, so anything that makes the day easier is more than welcome.”

Tech News: World of Yamaha
“This is a first for South Africa and the world. There’s nothing else like it…”
Prestige. Excellence. High-tech. Unique. These are just some of the superlatives that come to mind when trying to accurately describe Bidvest’s World of Yamaha, the newest showroom for the Japanese powerhouse brand Yamaha.
In what is not just a first for South Africa, but also the world, Yamaha have put all their product lines under one extraordinary roof for your browsing convenience. No longer do you need to visit individual product stores because you can now look around for all your musical instruments, audio visual equipment, power products, motorbikes and intelligent machinery requirements in just one sole location.
Yamaha Music CEO, Mike Hardy-Brown, explains that the move was an expensive and ambitious exercise, but a sound long-term investment, as it will unquestionably assist in brand strength and brand building by putting all their divisions and franchises together; therefore, also giving Yamaha a stronger marketplace presence.
“There is now a lot of synergy with the service departments, and, in terms of sales and marketing, we’re all under one roof. It makes [internal] communication much easier, and, logistically, it has been quite an advantage for us.”
From a customer perspective, Hardy-Brown believes that this building opens up the doors to a bigger and broader product range, as well as the esteemed and celebrated Yamaha lifestyle or culture. “It’ll create a higher demand for the Yamaha brand per se [not just the individual product lines]. We’ve already received a positive reaction, and hopefully it continues to create a bigger demand [for the brand].”
Viewable from the M1 highway (actually, it’s rather unmissable) and just a few minutes away from the business hub of Sandton, the extraordinary building is a marvel to behold, as the massive structure encompasses Yamaha’s core values of being first-class, modern and ahead of the pack in its striking appearance. It consists of: a luxurious, spacious showroom with built-in sound systems (which can be controlled remotely via an iPad); a retail outlet for Yamaha branded clothing and accessories; a middle section coffee bar that can cater for 100-700 guests; a full industrial sized kitchen; specifically designed sound rooms for product testings; and a state of the art auditorium/theatre for approximately 200 people, which has already been christened by one of South Africa’s favourite rock bands, Prime Circle.
Music fans are undoubtedly licking their lips at the possibility of more live events and functions in the future, and Hardy-Brown confirms that many more will be hosted in this professionally lighted, pitch-perfect theatre. “It’ll be [a] very regular [occurrence]. We have planned for it to be a commercial theatre, which is also rentable, so, we’re going to be having quite a few events and we are looking to feature a lot of bands and artists. The theatre will also be used for our internal launch events. For example, if we’re launching a motorbike or new piano or Clavinova, it’s going to be used for that, as well.”
There is hardly anything more frustrating than walking into a showroom and not being able to find an in-house specialist who can answer all your relevant questions and product queries – especially when you are looking to part with some hard earned moolah.
However, valuing the “knowledge is power” ethos and offering nothing but the best in customer service, Yamaha’s in-house music specialist is a true master of his craft, who is more than capable of answering all your questions and perhaps teach you a thing or two. “On the music side, we have a qualified classical pianist, who took part in various Japanese competitions, and is very knowledgeable on piano, synthesisers, keyboards and instruments right across the board. He is really a specialist in his field,” Hardy-Brown declares.
Looking around the music section, it’s certain to become a little piece of heaven for musicians, hobbyists, collectors and occasional jammers, as it showcases the “Rolls Royce” of guitars, pianos, drums and other instruments.
Apart from the retail store on the premises, which sells official Yamaha branded clothing and accessories (the store also has the official bike of multiple MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi on display; just for all you racing and bike enthusiasts), the showroom does not sell directly to the public. Hardy-Brown explains how the showroom works and what the process would be if you wanted to purchase a product.
“Firstly, we run the customer through all the features and functions of the product, explain the significance of the brand, and then link them with one of the retail outlets in the customer’s area. So, for example, if someone comes in from Limpopo, we’d put him/her in touch with one of our dealers up there, finalise the deal telephonically, and then leave it up to the customer to decide if he/she wants to pay here or there.”
In other words, Bidvest’s World of Yamaha is a sophisticated showroom and not a walk-in, buy off the floor retail outlet – so, don’t go there and plan on buying guitar strings or something…
In this day and age, the word “revolutionary” gets thrown around quite a bit, but there really is no other way to describe Bidvest’s World of Yamaha.
“This building is really unique, and can’t be replicated anywhere else in the world. We’re the only agents [worldwide] that have everything that Yamaha manufactures – from motorbikes to boats to grand pianos to audio systems to even robotics. This is a first for South Africa and the world. There’s nothing else like it,” Hardy-Brown concludes.
Without a doubt, Bidvest’s World of Yamaha will change the way in which you look at other showrooms in the future – it’s simply not about glass panels and shiny showroom floors anymore; it’s about the entire experience… The Yamaha experience.
Remember, Bidvest’s World of Yamaha is a high class showroom, not a retail outlet.

Tech News: Taylor Guitars Announces new Limited Edition Signature Series Serj Tankian T5 Model
One of rock’s most compelling frontmen, Serj Tankian helped propel the band System of a Down to multi-platinum success from the late ’90s through 2006. The band’s exotic musical influences, which drew in part from the members’ shared Armenian-American heritage, filtered into their hardcore/thrash metal/avant-progressive rock sensibilities. Their resulting sound was fiercely original, marked by dynamic mood shifts that juxtaposed ethereal melodies with pummelling speed riffs. Together with Serj’s socially conscious lyrics and soaring vocals, System’s mix of tension and release connected deeply with listeners and earned widespread critical acclaim. The band’s five studio records have sold more than 16 million copies, and their prodigious artistic output peaked with the double studio releases Mesmerize and, later, Hypnotize in 2005, making them the first rock act in chart history to debut two No. 1 new studio albums in a calendar year.

Tech News: Music and Beyond with the Mediatech 2011 Exhibition 20-22 July at the Coca-Cola dome
“…excellent exhibitors, and interactive workshops and demos are what make Mediatech Africa such a successful trade exhibition.”
As South African artists chip away at the international arena with notable inroads having been made in recent years by groups such as Die Antwoord, Goldfish, The Parlotones, Black Coffee, Arno Carstens and many others, the musical landscape back home is burgeoning to say the least. More and more people are picking up guitars, learning to DJ or forming bands as we all look to explore our creative side. A clear indication of the popularity in this sector is the large crowds surrounding the musical demonstrations at the last Mediatech Africa Expo two years ago.
Africa’s top suppliers of equipment and services allied to this segment are exhibiting at Mediatech Africa, which takes place from 20-22 July at the Coca-Cola dome in Northriding where South Africa’s advanced technology trade expo will exhibit the latest in technology and equipment, without the inherent cost of visiting overseas exhibitions.
“There is always something new, always new technology” says Mediatech Africa’s Exhibition Director Simon Robinson. “The proactive and strategic marketing of the expo, its exhilarating atmosphere and the clear structure of the exhibition makes it easy for visitors to find what they are looking for. These factors, coupled with excellent exhibitors, and interactive workshops and demos are what make Mediatech Africa such a successful trade exhibition.”
“We’ve chosen to exhibit at Mediatech Africa this year as it is the biggest audio visual expo in Africa and provides a lot exposure” says Wynand Mans of EMENDY Sound and Music Technologies who specialise in the improvement of South African music and entertainment standards via education. “We are a music technology college, production and recording studio as well as a music technology shop”.
He continues, “We exhibited at the previous Mediatech Africa to promote the College and it was a big success and this year we’ll be exhibiting fully functional workstations enabling us to run workshops of our course material to interested parties”.
Rui Valentim, High Tech Product Manager of MIDI Music, a division of TOMS Sound and Music (Pty) Ltd is also a previous exhibitor. “Exhibitions like these are normally a long term investment” he says. Valentim believes that this year his company will benefit from the exposure of the AVID product portfolio, however Midi Music are also agents for Pro Tools, M-Audio, Genelec, Mackie, QSC, Roland, Ibanez, Tama and Marshall, some of which will be on display.
This biennial trade exhibition will showcase broadcast, film and production; professional AV, sound, lighting, staging and rigging; DJ and professional music equipment; system integration; animation, new media and web; satellite and signal; computer music and production tools; and musical instrument sectors.
The diverse programme will include live demonstrations, work-shops, and a business matchmaking programme. Visitors will be able to pre-register and be matched to relevant exhibitors. Meetings will then be facilitated between interested parties, allowing exhibitors to engage with visitors on a more personal level.
If you are involved in any aspect of the music industry, from bedroom DJ or aspiring musician, to sound reinforcement, studio engineering etc, no matter how or where you fit in, as a Muse Magazine reader you want to visit Mediatech this year. We insist! Which is why we’re offering you a FREE Entrance ticket right here to attend and soak up all the action, the workshops, the products on display and of course the networking opportunities. This is not to be missed.

Tech News: Dynamics Effects – Part 1 – Compressors
Some of the most difficult to understand effects processors are dynamics processors such as compressors, expanders, noise gates and limiters. While we all know effects like distortion, equalisers and reverbs and what they sound like, dynamics processors are not usually detectable unless they are used heavily.
What are “dynamics”?
Dynamics are the differences in volume in a signal. Most sounds have parts which are, and stand out louder than others. A piece of music is “dynamic” if there are large differences between the quieter and louder parts. The difference between the quietest and the loudest parts of a sound is called the dynamic range.
Take a look at the wave files below of: a distorted electric guitar on the left and an acoustic guitar track on the right:
While they both have the same peak level, the electric guitar track is denser, with less dynamics, while the acoustic is more dynamic.
Sometimes you want to make a track more dynamic because a dynamically squashed track doesn’t always stand out, while one with good dynamics will. Other times you may want a track less dynamic – if the overall track is too quiet and you cannot raise the level without clipping.
What Compressors Do
The basic function of a compressor is to alter the dynamics of a track. It does this by boosting the volume of the quiet parts and reducing the volume of the loud parts. The difference between the loud and quiet parts is lessened, so the track’s dynamics are reduced helping it to “sit” in the mix so it is always audible, but never too loud. By lowering the dynamics, the overall track level can be boosted, and the track can be louder without distorting.
Compressor Controls
Threshold
The level above which the compressor starts working the volume. When the threshold set at its highest point, the compressor will not change the sound’s volume. As the threshold is lowered, peaks will trigger the volume reduction effect.
Ratio
Ratio is how much the volume will be reduced. A ratio of 2:1 will reduce the volume of peaks crossing the threshold by a factor of two – this means that a peak 5 dB above the threshold level will be reduced to only 2.5 dB above the threshold level. A ratio of 5:1 and the peaks will have their volume reduced by a factor of five – the same peak will now be only 1dB above the threshold level.
Attack
Attack is the time it takes before the compressor reduces the volume. A longer attack time lets more of the peak through before compression.
Release
The time it takes before the compressor allows the volume to return to normal after the peak has fallen below the threshold.
Basic compressor use
Evening levels
If you have a track which has an occasional peak which is louder than the rest of the track, sometimes when it is mixed loud enough to hear the quieter parts, the peaks will be too loud and mixing it lower makes most of the track disappear. In short, it is too dynamic. This might look like this:
Compressing this track results in the following, which has a more even volume:
Note: I used more compression than I normally would to make the effect obvious: threshold -12 db, ratio 10:1, attack 10 ms, release 40 ms.
Controlling peaks
Sometimes the track will be fine aside from a few peaks which jump out. Fixing this is easy – use the compressor as you did above, but set the threshold carefully so it clamps down on nothing but the peaks.
Accentuating Attack
You can also use compression to make a track jump out of a mix. If a track doesn’t bite, it’s because it doesn’t have enough attack. As mentioned, the attack control on a compressor lets a certain amount of signal pass through uncompressed before compression kicks in.
Here’s a track that had almost no attack before compression:
Note that there is no difference in volume between the attack portion and the rest of the note. Using a compressor with a 5:1 ratio, threshold of -16 db, attack of 100 ms, and release of 10 ms produces this:
The attack of each note now stands out more from the sustain.
We just used our compressor to increase the dynamics of the track instead of decreasing it.

Tech News: Play Better Bass – Bass Styles: Different Styles of Electric Bass Playing
Bass Playing styles can be divided into four main categories.
- Finger-style
- Picking (plectrum/picks)
- Slapping and Popping
- Tapping
Finger-style is by far the most popular style. Players alternate between the Index and Middle fingers. (Right Hand for right handed players)
You can also use the other three fingers. The thumb sometimes gets used in African Music in a Wes Montgomery type of style. This style should not be confused with “Popping”. Advanced players will also use more than 2 fingers on the right hand. For Double stops and chords you can even use all the fingers.
Walking Bass is usually associated with Jazz and Blues, but can be found in other styles of music. It is a good idea to keep a library of walking bass “licks” in order to keep walking lines interesting and not too repetitive. Your right hand is very close to the neck in order to get a fatter sound. (You can find out more about this style in one of our previous editions.)
The sound of a walking bass-line is generally ever-changing rather than a simple riff following chord progression. The walking line can use scale tones, arpeggios and passing tones, and provides an undulating melody that rises and falls in tone over several bars. With funk the bass-lines are more syncopated, and the left hand plays a vital rule in muting strings to play “dead notes”. Sometimes the palm of the right hand can get used to mute strings. This is called Palm Muting and the Thumb, Index and Middle Fingers are used. This is very popular in West African Music. In Rock music you alternate most of the time with the Index and Middle finger.
Picking involves the use – obviously – of a pick (or plectrum) and is used commonly in punk and rock styles. Bass picks are normally thicker and bigger than guitar picks. You use up and down strokes, very much like guitar players. This style gives one more attack to your sound.
Slapping and Popping has been used in funk and fusion music for many years but nowadays this style is incorporated into pop, rock and world music too.
For this style you have to be able to:
- Be precise with thumb attacks.
- Only hit the string you want to sound.
- Master the art of muting strings.
- Attack muted thumb notes with the same intensity as sounded notes.
- Control your Pull attacks that they are not louder or more intense than thumb attacks
Slap techniques are labeled as follows:
T=Thumb attack.
X=Dead note (String attacked as indicated, but not allowed to ring. These are notated using the open string on which they are attacked.)
U=Thumb-up stroke (thumb pulls up from under the string)
S=Slide
H=Hammer on (no attack with slapping hand)
P=Pull string with first or second finger
L=Lift finger from previous note to the note with the L above it
Slurs show when notes are sounded without a right-hand attack, as in hammers, slides, and lifts. (Only the first note of a slurred group is articulated with the right hand.)
The basic idea of Slapping and Popping is to hit the string with your thumb on the last fret and pop (plug) with your Index and/or Ring finger.
Abe Laboriel, Larry Graham, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Flea, Les Claypool and Mark King are all happening “Slappers.”
Tapping just means any system of playing electric bass where you touch the string to the fret to sound the note, rather than plucking the strings. Hold your bass as usual, and with your left hand you’ll either hold a chord or play some notes. Your right hand will be further up the neck, and as a left finger hits some notes, you’ll quickly use a right finger to play a note higher up the neck. One simple way to think it through is just to play your diatonic or pentatonic scale or a given chord with your left hand, and with your right hand play that same diatonic or pentatonic scale but higher on the neck. It’s this rapid alternation of your left fingers and right fingers that gives the Van Halen style its drive and interest.
The other method is more like playing a bass and guitar at the same time, or, with the right instrument, it is more like piano playing. Here you are not going to alternate two hands on the same string, at least not very often. Instead you’ll play low notes (like bass) or chords with your left hand near to the nut and with your right hand you’ll play melodies or rhythmic chords on the strings higher up, closer to the body. It’s more like a piano, for example, with chords in the left hand and melody in the right, or like a piano where you play roots and bass patterns low and left-handed, and rhythm chords or melody higher-pitched with the right hand.
Michael Manring, Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm, Tony Levin and Billy Sheehan are some of the masters of this style.
Hammer-ons, pull- offs and all the other left hand “tricks” can be used in all styles. These days it is vey important to master as many styles as possible.
Till next time, LET THERE BE BASS!!!

Tech News: Play Better Guitar – Metronome….say what!!
Welcome to Play Better Guitar, and yes we are going to talk about the metronome although many people might say “what’s that?” I have been teaching guitar for many years as well as producing guitar in the studio and the one common flaw I find amongst guitarists is the weak rhythm playing and the inability to play in time. Obviously if you don’t have the metronome on, you will always sound like you’re in time.
Working with a metronome will give you a strong rhythmical sense.
Often I will go listen to bands and most times I find that guitarists tend to consistently rush their playing.
Many people might say that this has to do with feel and that you can’t teach feel; maybe not but you can practice it. Even if you are practising your latest licks do it with a metronome and you will find that in time your playing will get a better flow and your feel will change.
Many of the artists from 15 years ago say they never used a metronome but they would jam to records and that in itself is like playing with a glorified metronome.
Take it one step further… record yourself playing against a metronome, scales, some strumming, some finger picking and then you be the judge as to where and how your playing sounds and feels.
There are many exercises you can do with a metronome. I have found that the most useful way of using it is by putting the clicks on beats 2 and 4, this will give you a very strong sense of the back beat. No matter what your favourite style is, consistent practice with this tool will make you a better player and although I am not saying that this should replace your jam time what I am saying is that it should be added to your practice routine!!!
Imagine feeling the groove so well that you could play any rhythmical pattern; this will add another dimension to your performance with great feel.
So here is a little exercise; we’re going to take one of the licks from last months lesson and move it onto a different beat; once again make sure you use a metronome and start off slowly.
Exercise 1
This is one of the licks from the last lesson, take note how it starts on beat 4, now try and play the lick starting on an offbeat.
Exercise 2
Ok so here we have the same lick as above except the lick starts on the offbeat.
This is the kind of command you can have around rhythms if you practice them properly, and once again listen to players that know how to use rhythm to their playing advantage.
Exercise 3
Here we have a 5-note pattern played in groups of four, the difficult part to this lick is to put the accent on the correct beat or it would not really matter.
Exercise 4
By doing this we can make old licks interesting by just manipulating the rhythm, so once again that’s why it is so important to have a firm grip on the sense of rhythm and time keeping.
That’s all for this month, I do suggest you go out and get yourself a jam buddy; the Korg ToneWorks is a great tool to keep close at hand or just a simple metronome like the Boss DB-30.
What I like about the Korg is the option to use different sounds with a groove, however sometimes the simplicity of a plain metronome is challenging so try both and mix it up. I think the important point is to get something that will challenge your time keeping and try and make a recording of this as this will help “You Be The judge.”
Till next time have fun with the metronome, and once again don’t just take my word for it but test this concept and make it your own!!!

Tech News: Your Private Universe – Unconventional Recording Techniques: Acoustic Guitar
Techniques for the home studio
Generally an acoustic guitar is recorded as accurately as possible to capture the natural sound that we are all familiar with. However in this issue I am going to take a look at some rather unconventional recording techniques for acoustic guitar. Whether you want to create some of your own weird and wonderful samples to use in more electronic based tracks, or if you are just looking for a way to make your acoustic guitar recordings stand out from the crowd there is a lot to be said for looking at some different recording techniques.
Usually one would mike up an acoustic guitar with a microphone placed in front of the bridge and one placed in front of the 12th fret (of course there are many other common ways besides this to mic up an acoustic guitar). The blend of these two mics will give you a very natural sound. So what can we do to get a more unconventional sound? Well the possibilities are actually endless. Here are some interesting techniques that I have come across.
One of the more common methods is to try and capture what the guitarist hears. This can be achieved by placing a mic or a stereo pair of mics over the players shoulder at about head height. This is a good way of giving your musician a sound that he is familiar with as it is essentially capturing what he hears when he plays.
Another useful technique is to place a microphone behind or underneath the body of the guitar. This can be useful for capturing some overtones as well as reinforcing some of the lower frequency content of the sound.
If your room has a particularly great sound I would set up a couple of room mics to capture the ambience of the room, however you can also create some very interesting sounds by placing mics in unconventional places in the room like in a corner or pointing towards a reflective surface. Generally this would be regarded as “breaking the rules” but you can get some very interesting sounding results.
There is almost an infinite amount of ways you could mic up a guitar for a less natural sound. Some important thinks to remember is that the higher up the neck of the guitar you place the mic, the “thinner” the sound will become. Essentially you are capturing more of the high frequencies. You will also pick up much more finger work. If you place a mic near the bridge you will pick up more mid to low frequencies and if you place a mic in front of the sound hole you will get a very “boomy” sound. Another important thing to remember is that the further you move the mic away from the sound source the more the ambience of the room will affect the sound.
Of course your choice of microphone is going to make a big difference too. Generally speaking a larger diaphragm micro-phone will be better at picking up lower frequencies and a smaller diaphragm will be better at capturing high frequencies. (I must state that this is generally true. For a more accurate understanding of a microphones response you will need to check the frequency response chart of the microphone you intend using).
So get out there and experiment with microphones and placement to find just the right sound you are looking for. These are some great ways of building up your own personal sample library. It is always useful to have some of your own-recorded samples for use in composing electronic and sample based compositions.
We will continue next issue with some more unconventional recording techniques, until then keep experimenting!

Over the past year, 10,000 users have experienced Crown’s ground-breaking HiQnet™ Band Manager™ system configuration and control software and are deploying it in a number of portable PA applications from DJs, to bands and singers. The free-of-charge application provides an intuitive user centric, function-driven interface designed to simplify system setup and management while enabling audio professionals, musicians, and engineers to configure and control a rack of Crown XTi series amplifiers. Band Manager unlocks all loudspeaker-processing capabilities of the XTi Series.
Band Manager makes smart use of browser-style navigation and the ‘Home’ screen displays monitor strips for each amplifier in the rack and front-of-house EQ and level control. EQ for stage monitors and all other processing is accessible on an individual amplifier basis. Upon starting Band Manager, all amplifier settings are transferred from the connected devices but they can also be saved to disk for quick recall if the rack is used often in multiple venues.
Band Manager is a cut-down version of its parent software, HiQnet System Architect™, a much larger application which provides full-system control of over 70 professional audio devices from across the entire Harman Pro group, including the XTi Series. Anyone who has already used System Architect with the XTi will instantly be familiar with the amplifier control layout since Band Manager makes use of the same software plug in. Directly tailoring Band Manager to the needs of portable PA market enables far quicker configuration of a rack of XTi amplifiers by bringing only the essential tools into direct focus. For those who need the more advanced control, any rack configurations saved within Band Manager can be opened in System Architect. By using the plug in concept, Band Manager is all ready to control other future portable PA HiQnet devices.
Commenting on the success of Band Manager over the last year, Andy Flint, Crown Marketing Manager for portable PA stated, “Band Manager is successful because it provides real value. It simplifies the process of setting up and optimizing the PA system, while at the same time allowing users to extract the maximum from their system. Put simply, it’s a performance accelerate.”

News: Soundcraft Tshwane
Tshwane University of Technology Music Department
Wild and Marr was called in to design a sound and lighting system for the proposed performance auditorium of the Tshwane University of Technology’s Music department. JBL SRX738 three- way loudspeakers were identified as the right product as they would deliver open and transparent mid and high frequency performance which is ideally suited to jazz where the ability to enjoy the nuances and detail in the music is paramount. Being a three-way system with an 18-inch transducer taking care of the sub and bass frequencies, no additional subwoofers were required. JBL AC28/95 and AC28/120 compact front fill loudspeakers were installed to ensure even coverage and coherence in the front rows. The system is powered by Crown CTS amplifiers with a CTS3000 driving the two 18” sub-bass loudspeakers, CTS2000 driving the mid/highs in passive mode and a CTS1200 to drive the AC28 front fills.
A BSS Soundweb BLU160 processor with 96KHz sample capability was used for loudspeaker management and processing while a Soundcraft GB424 was chosen for its simplicity of operation balanced with the high quality GB30 microphone pre-amplifiers and musical EQ section.

Tech News: RME’s BOB-16 starts shipping
RME starts shipping three different BOB-16 breakout boxes – perfect rack solutions for interconnecting multichannel XLRs with the common D-sub connector format.
The BOB-16 connects up to 16 XLR inputs and/or 16 XLR outputs (Neutrik connectors) with two D-sub 25-pin connectors. It works like two breakout cables D-Sub from/to XLR. The usual multicore breakout cables are replaced with a 19″ rack mount unit, preventing cable chaos, errors and connection problems.
Three different versions are available: BOB-16 I, BOB-16 O and BOB-16 I/O.
BOB-16 I: Connects 16 XLR inputs to two D-sub 25-pin outputs (channels 1-8 and channels 9-16). The breakout box supports all interfaces using analog 25-pin D-sub inputs as well as the following RME interfaces: M-32 DA, M-16 DA.
BOB-16 O: Connects 8 XLR outputs to two D-sub 25-pin inputs (channels 1-8 and channels 9-16). The breakout box supports all interfaces using an analog 25-pin D-sub output as well as the following RME interfaces: M-32 AD, M-16 AD.
BOB-16 I/O: Connects 8 XLR inputs to a D-sub 25-pin connector and 8 XLR outputs to another D-sub 25-pin connector. The breakout box supports all interfaces using an analog 25-pin D-sub I/O as well as the following RME interfaces: ADI-8 QS, ADI-8 DS, M-32 AD, M-32 DA, M-16 AD, M-16 DA. The BOB-16 is pin compatible to the common TASCAM pinout format (e. g. used by RME and Digidesign). Adapters to the YAMAHA format are available from RME partner ALVA.
All three BOB-16 boxes provide the revolutionary Flip frame option. It allows to change rack brackets and handles from front to rear and thus to change XLR or D-sub from front to rear as well. This way a BOB will perfectly fit in every rack and working situation.

Tech News: Shure introduces Axient Wireless management Network
The first wieless microphone system that can detect interference and avoid automatically.
At the 2011 NAMM Show in Anaheim/USA, Shure introduces its Axient wireless management network which can automatically change frequencies, undetected by the user, to avoid interference. Axient defines a new standard for control and confidence in applications with zero tolerance for failure.
“Uncertainty and volatility in the RF spectrum are the new reality for professional wireless users.” said Sandy LaMantia, President and CEO of Shure Incorporated. “They face increasing pressure to deliver interference-free performance in the most critical live broadcast, theater, music and corporate events, even though conditions are more unpredictable than ever before. Axient was designed from the outset to withstand interference from the analog and digital sources that exist today and will exist in the future.”
The Axient wireless management network includes several innovative features providing flawless RF performance, stellar audio quality, and unparalleled user control:
The Axient Spectrum Manager constantly scans the RF environment and performs frequency compatibility calculations to assign clear frequencies to each wireless transmitter. It permanently monitors, ranks and deploys backup frequencies. If the Interference Detection & Avoidance feature detects RF interference it moves to a clear and compatible frequency and deploys it to the transmitter in milliseconds via ShowLink remote control. Frequency Diversity goes even further. It transmits full-bandwidth audio on two separate frequencies to ensure uninterrupted audio for mission-critical channels. The new software interface Shure Wireless Workbench 6 offers sweeping functionality that optimizes the power of Axient enabling users to monitor and control the entire network. Furthermore touring-grade Axient rechargeable batteries and chargers deliver real-time intelligence about power levels and charge history for all power platform devices.
“The Spectrum Manager functions as an air traffic controller for the system.” said Erik Vaveris, Category Director for Wireless Products at Shure. “When the receiver’s Interference Detection & Avoidance feature senses interferences, the Spectrum Manager assigns a new frequency that it knows is clean. The frequency is deployed to the transmitter by the ShowLink wireless access point, and the transmitter and receiver execute a synchronized frequency change in a matter of milliseconds, making it virtually undetectable. And with Frequency Diversity enabled, there is no audible trace whatsoever.”
The Shure Axient wireless management network will become available in Europe in the second half of 2011.

Tech News: Gibson is Back
You know how the saying goes: “absence only makes the heart grow fonder”…
Gibson. It’s a prestigious name for every serious guitar player. Yet 4 years ago, South African shredders got a shock as the famed guitar brand disappeared from local instrument retail stores without an explanation or even a goodbye note.
Sadly, six string aficionados could no longer purchase Gibson guitars from stores nationwide and had to rely on overseas orders to get their fix; it need not be said that our local postal service probably did a good job in raping and pillaging more than a few packages and leaving many guitarists unhappy and frustrated at this situation.
Bringing Back The Power
However, Marshall Music’s flagship store in Woodmead heeded the calls from virtuosos countrywide and decided to do everything in their power to get Gibson back on our shores – and guess what? They succeeded and are now the official and exclusive dealers for the brand in SA.
In other words, as licensed dealers, they are able to sell the guitars at the same competitive prices as the online and overseas retailers and supply you with the Gibson of your dreams – after all, choosing a guitar is a very personal experience and you shouldn’t just settle for any old piece of wood.
Additionally, if you stay far away from the store (but still within the borders of South Africa), don’t sweat; you can order the guitars directly from them and they’ll ship it to you and cough up for the courier fees.
Celebrate Good Times
To celebrate the awesome news of this illustrious partnership, Marshall Music Woodmead threw a bash at Tanz Café in Fourways, Johannesburg, on the 25th of January 2011. The venue was painted red that night as the party was ignited by enthusiasts, guitar collectors, party goers and local rock stars, such as Prime Circle, Wonderboom, Watershed and Chromium, who use and abuse Gibsons on a regular basis.
Also, on the night, a raffle was held and a prized Gibson Les Paul got handed out to one lucky winner, who must probably be polishing that guitar and posturing like Slash from Guns ‘n’ Roses every day since. Arno Carstens and Flies (a cover band featuring the members of Just Jinjer) provided the entertainment for the evening and churned out some quality rock ‘n’ roll with the mandatory “local is lekker” flavour. At the end of the evening, the performers further thrilled the audience by unexpectedly joining forces for an impromptu jam session right on stage.
Interestingly enough, amidst the sound of music, it was worth noting that the artists also used Gibson guitars for their performances – Arno strummed along on the J-200, while Flies’ Gavin Morein let his fingers do the talking on the Gibson Les Paul model.
The Future Of Gibson In South Africa
After such a smashing event, Marshall Music Woodmead’s resident guitar specialist Stuart Goodwin explains that this was only the beginning of great things to come from the partnership between Marshall Music and Gibson. “Marshall Music Woodmead are the first official dealers. The next one will be Marshall Music Cape Town; they’ll be holding a launch in about a month or two, so look out for a big party in Cape Town. We’re also hosting the Gibson Acoustic competition every Tuesday night at Tanz Café, which is a competition for singers/songwriters to showcase their skills. The first prize will be a R20 000 Gibson acoustic guitar.”
When Orville Gibson started manufacturing mandolins in the late 1890s, no one could’ve predicted that down the line he’d be instrumental in creating not just a recognisable brand, but a cultural icon. Even though Gibson was gone for a while here, it was never forgotten. In fact, you know how the saying goes: “absence only makes the heart grow fonder”.
Remember, Marshall Music Woodmead is the only official dealer of Gibson in South Africa, at the time of writing, so if you want to purchase one, you’ll have to chat directly to them.
