Bertie Blackman is an Independent Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist. She rose to fame with her debut album in 2004, entitled Headway which came after years of prolific performances around Sydney’s Inner city venues, where she developed a dedicated following. She also happens to be the daughter of renowned Oz artist, Charles Blackman. Secrets & Lies is an innovative and accomplished 3rd album release by this Australian singer. It sees her delve into the world of samplers, keyboards and synths to create dark pop music with depth, all underpinned by electronica. Her influences include Bjork, Radiohead, Suzan Vega and others and this is perhaps the most telling explanation for her venture into this world of synth enhanced soundscapes. Her voice is haunting and soulful and despite the horrible opening track, Town of Sorrow, from there on out it’s a deep pop album laden with gems. It’s a bit of a sidestep for her so whilst it may not please all her fans she’ll no doubt pick up plenty new ones. Varied and full of emotion.
