Album Review: Band of Skulls – Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

Band of Skulls are my new favourite band! The English trio’s debut album was first released exclusively on iTunes back in 2009 and with what seems to be a trend these days, has since been put to CD for general release. June this year saw them support Jack White’s The Dead Weather and in September they’re reportedly opening for Muse. The Skull’s bluesy rock is tinged with just enough grunge and the right dose of pop sensibility to be instantly likeable yet layered with enough substance to get better with each listen. Dripping with a Southern swamp grit, theirs is a sound you’d expect from the backwaters of New Orleans rather than their tame little hometown of Southampton. The trio’s music would not be out of place in an episode of True Blood, yet it retains an indie sensibility with strong, relevant lyrics that are quite original and cool. Basically whatever White is trying to do with The Dead Weather, Band of Skulls seem to be achieving with this refreshingly varied, yet cohesive blues, alt-rock album that simply oozes sleazy, sexiness and genuine authenticity.  Highly recommended.
